The Stolen Girl, which recently began airing on Freeform and streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, is a thrilling limited series about a mother who grapples with her daughter’s sudden disappearance. But is The Stolen Girl series based on a true story?

In the five-part series, Denise Gough stars as Elisa, a mother of two who allows her nine-year-old daughter Lucia to have an overnight playdate with her new friend Josie. Elisa feels at ease with the decision after visiting Josie’s house and meeting her parents. But when she returns the next day to pick Lucia up, she realizes Lucia and Josie’s family are nowhere to be found, sparking an investigation that will unearth several secrets Elisa and her family have been hiding for years. Is there a reason why Rebecca (Holliday Grainger) chose to abduct Lucia?

Decider’s Joel Keller recommended streaming the series, noting in Decider’s review of The Stolen Girl, “While the first episode of The Stolen Girl is a bit too predictable, there does seem to be a really twisty story underneath the predictable premiere.”

Is The Stolen Girl based on a true story?

The show was written by Catherine Moulton and adapted from the bestselling novel Playdate by Alex Dahl. Dahl also served as an executive producer on the series.

Newsweek reports the story is partially inspired by the tragically true story of Maureen Dabbagh, a mother whose daughter was abducted by her ex-husband in 1993 and taken to the Middle East, per The Associated Press.

However, promotional materials for the show make no mention of a real-world connection.
