Any show about a ruthless drug-smuggling scheme buried under the surface of an outwardly peaceful small town is sure to leave viewers hooked. Netflix’s The Waterfront is no exception — the new drama swam to number one on Netflix’s Top 10 upon its release, and after a finale that delivered one shocker after the next, viewers are fishing for signs of Season 2.

Set on the coast of North Carolina, The Waterfront follows the Buckley family as they struggle to keep their fishing empire above water. When family patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany) suffers two heart attacks, his son Cane (Jake Weary) and wife Belle (Maria Bello) must resort to doing business with an underground drug cartel for cash. They must also care for Bree (Melissa Benoist), Cane’s recovering alcoholic sister who wishes to reconnect with her son after losing custody of him.

The finale was a monsoon of twists: after drug lord Grady (Topher Grace) shoots Bree and throws her overboard, Harlan and Cane rescue her and take revenge, leaving Grady swimming with the fishes. All appears peaceful amidst the Buckley clan until Belle meets up with Emmett Parker (Terry Serpico), a member of a much more powerful crime family, appearing to agree to an alliance behind her husband’s back.

Will we get to see the aftermath of this earth-shattering finale? Here’s what we know about The Waterfront Season 2.

Has The Waterfront Been Greenlit for Season 2?

No, not yet. The series just premiered on June 19, so it may be a while before we receive definitive news of a series renewal. No need to panic — the show has raked in massive amounts of success and critical acclaim in its first week, so it’s probably only a matter of time until Season 2 gets announced.

When Might The Waterfront Season 2 Premiere?

It’s hard to say at this point. If the show does get renewed, the new season may not go into production until next year. So to those fans of The Waterfront casting out their line for a premiere date, you might have to wait a while before reeling in a big one.

What Does The Creator Have To Say About The Waterfront Season 2?

Fans aren’t the only ones hoping for a new season. Series creator Kevin Williamson shares his thoughts on a possible Season 2 with TV Insider: “The end of the first season feels like it’s still moving because you don’t want it to stop, right? So that’s a good sign, I think, for Season 2. I would like to see it just keep moving. I would like to see the family come together to stave off some universal villain.” Let’s hope we get to see that soon.

The Waterfront is available to stream on Netflix.
