It’s official: after a years-long battle, Taylor Swift is finally in complete control of her music. The iconic songstress, who got her big break as a teenager, took to her website to announce the big news. In a message shared on her website, Swift said, “All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.” The acquisition is a massive one. Not only did it likely cost Swift an enormous amount of money, but it finally put to rest a tough era in her life. The purchase could also explain why she has been so absent from the public in recent months.

Taylor Swift has officially reclaimed ownership of the master recordings for her first six studio albums. The purchase marks a massive victory in her battle to control her catalog. According to the Guardian, the acquisition, finalized in May 2025, involved a deal with Shamrock Capital, an investment firm that purchased the rights from Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in 2020. It is unclear what Swift paid for the rights to her music. Shamrock Capital paid $300 million for the rights, according to Variety.
The drama over Swift’s catalog began in 2019 when Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine Label Group, the group that held the rights to Swift’s catalog. Swift said she wasn’t offered the opportunity to purchase her catalog and viewed Braun’s acquisition as her “worst-case scenario.” On Tumblr, she noted that Braun had systematically bullied her during her early career.

Taylor Swift’s big announcement has been met with enthusiasm by fans, many of whom believe the news marks Swift’s return to public life. Swift has been living largely under the radar since Travis Kelce’s February 2025 Super Bowl appearance. Initially, fans and insiders attributed her low-key lifestyle to mounting drama in Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s legal case.
While it’s possible the legal trouble fed into her desire to keep things lowkey, working out this deal likely played a significant role, too. It makes perfect sense. After all, Swift was seen in public for the first time in recent history just yesterday when she grabbed dinner in New York City with Dakota Johnson. The duo hit up Via Carota, a West Village staple. Could they have been celebrating the purchase?
