Jamal Roberts is your American Idol!

The Mississippi P.E. teacher took home the Season 23 title during the May 18 finale, becoming the first Black man to win the competition since Ruben Studdard in 2003.

But for Roberts, the moment wasn’t just about the trophy, it was about the people who’ve supported him from the very beginning, especially his kids.

In a message shared on Instagram shortly after the show, Roberts expressed his gratitude and reflected on how far he’s come.

He wrote, “I’m still trying to process this… God is so good. From my first step on that stage to this unbelievable moment, I never dreamed a kid from my hometown would one day be called American Idol. This journey has been bigger than me, and I’m so grateful for every person who believed in me when I was just chasing a dream.”

He continued, “Most of all, I hope my girls see this and know that with faith, hard work, and heart, anything is possible. To my city, my family, and everyone out there grinding for something greater, this is our victory.”

“Now, I get to make music with the best in the world and share my story. But this isn’t the end… it’s just the beginning. From the bottom of my heart…. THANK YOU! None of this happens without y’all,” he concluded.

The win comes during an especially meaningful time for Roberts, who recently welcomed his third daughter, Gianna Grace, on May 9. He introduced her to the world in a sweet Instagram post just days before the finale, writing, “Hey world, meet my little ladybug, Gianna Grace Roberts. I’m so proud to be her father #girldadforlife #idol.”

Now, Roberts is eager to return home to spend time with Gianna and his older daughters, Harmoni and Lyrik. While his music career is about to take off, the elementary school coach isn’t ready to fully step away from teaching.

“I wasn’t really doing the teaching thing for the money. It was really the kids, (who are) just my inspiration,” he says. “So even if I could go back every now and then, just show up and be a part of something, I plan to do that.”
