Jamie Lee Curtis callously walks back sympathy for Charlie Kirk death

Jamie Lee Curtis recently seemed to distance herself from her earlier remarks of sympathy towards Charlie Kirk, following criticism from her progressive supporters.

The 66-year-old actress, who recently won an Oscar, initially received praise for her emotional reaction to the assassination of the Turning Point USA co-founder. In her statement, she expressed a hope that Kirk found solace in his faith during his final moments.

Given Curtis is a mother to a transgender child, her comments raised eyebrows, especially because of Kirk’s contentious views on LGBTQ+ issues.

However, in a recent interview, Curtis clarified her stance.

“A part of my statement was misinterpreted, suggesting I was expressing well wishes towards him,” she explained. “That wasn’t the case; I was merely referencing his spiritual beliefs.”

‘And so it was a mistranslation, which is a pun, but not,’ she said in the Variety cover story for the Power Of Women issue.

Jamie Lee Curtis surprised many as she had an emotional response to political activist Charlie Kirk 's assassination last month but the star has since made a rather cold-blooded U-turn on the matter.

Curtis went on to talk about the backlash public figures receive for making any sort of social or political stand.

The actress explained: ‘In the binary world today, you cannot hold two ideas at the same time: I cannot be Jewish and totally believe in Israel’s right to exist and at the same time reject the destruction of Gaza.

‘You can’t say that, because you get vilified for having a mind that says, ‘I can hold both those thoughts. I can be contradictory in that way.’

Many did not expect Curtis to cry over the Republican firebrand as she the actress has been a longtime proponent of LGBTQ+ rights, especially given that her daughter is trans.

Before his death, Charlie had said: ‘The transgender thing happening in America now is a throbbing middle finger to God.’

Curtis also pushed back on the assertion that she has to be careful with what she has to say as a public figure.

She said in the Variety piece: ‘I don’t have to be careful. If I was careful, I wouldn’t have told you any of what I just told you.

‘I would have just said, ‘Hi, welcome. I baked you banana bread. Here’s my dog. Here’s my house, blah, blah, blah. What do you want to know?’ I can’t not be who I am in the moment I am.’

Last month,  got surprisingly emotional while discussing the murder of right-wing political activist Kirk as he was speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10.

‘I’m going to bring something up with you just because it’s front of mind,’ the Halloween actress said on WTF with Marc Maron last month.

'An excerpt of it mistranslated what I was saying as I wished him well — like I was talking about him in a very positive way, which I wasn’t; I was simply talking about his faith in God,' Curtis said

‘I disagreed with him on almost every point I ever heard him say, but I believe he was a man of faith, and I hope in that moment when he died, that he felt connected with his faith.’

Curtis – an outspoken Democrat – began crying: ‘Even though I find what he, his ideas were abhorrent to me. I still believe he’s a father and a husband and a man of faith. And I hope whatever connection to God means that he felt it.’

The Turning Point USA co-founder was shot and killed on the first stop of his American Comeback Tour where he challenges college students to debate him.

The suspected gunman – 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson – was turned over to the US Marshals Service by his own father last month.

Kirk is survived by his wife Erika and their two children.

Curtis also worries about ‘the longitudinal effects of seeing’ footage of Kirk’s gruesome execution on social media platforms.

‘I know there is video of his assassination. I know people who’ve seen it,’ Jamie said.

‘The Zapruder film is the only visual document that moves, that shares that horror of what happened [to President John F. Kennedy in 1963]. But here we have now these images.’

Curtis continued: ‘And we are inured to them and we are numb to them, but they are in there. We don’t know enough psychologically about what that does. What does that do? That kind of — I don’t ever want to see this footage of this man being shot.’

The Halloween alum has been hard at work promoting Paul Greengrass’ wildfire survival drama The Lost Bus, which she executive produced, that hits limited US theaters this Friday before streaming October 3 on Apple TV+.

The big-screen adaptation of Lizzie Johnson’s 2021 book Paradise – starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera – currently has an 83% critic approval rating (out of 30 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.
