Jay-Z and Kanye West had a friendly and professional relationship, but it has deteriorated in recent years. Jay-Z met West in the earliest days of his career and believed he was the first person to consider him a genius. West has publicly aired some of his problems with Jay-Z, which didn’t bother him nearly as much as other comments he made. Jay-Z shared what West said to make him angry.
Jay-Z shared what Kanye West did to make him angry
During a 2016 concert in Sacramento, West directly addressed Beyoncé, who was not in attendance. He claimed that she tried to secure a VMA over himself and Drake.
“So, when I talk about MTV, let me explain something. I was hurt,” he said. “Beyoncé, I was hurt because I wanted to present a video called ‘Fade’ and I don’t expect MTV to help me. Mr. West, I don’t respect you. I will let you know that Beyoncé is winning the video tonight for ‘Formation’ over ‘Hotline Bling’ and ‘Famous’ … Beyoncé, I was hurt because I heard that you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won Video of the Year over me and over ‘Hotline Bling.’”
During the same tour, West complained that Beyoncé and Jay-Z hadn’t checked up on him after Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris. Jay-Z said it bothered him that West called out his family so publicly.
“[T]he whole point is, ‘You got hurt because this person was talking about you on a stage.’ But what really hurt me was, you can’t bring my kids and my wife into it,” he said, per Fader. “Kanye’s my little brother. He’s talked about me 100 times. He made a song called ‘Big Brother.’ We’ve gotten past bigger issues.”
It wasn’t easy for Jay-Z to let go of this issue, though.
“But you brought my family into it,” he said. “Now it’s a problem with me. That’s a real, real problem. And he knows it’s a problem.”
Jay-Z said he was open to reconciling with Kanye West
While Jay-Z was not happy with West, he believed the other man knew he made a mistake.
“He knows that he crossed the line,” Jay-Z said. “I know him. He knows. I know he knows, because we’ve never let this much space go between one of our disagreements, and we’ve had many, because that’s who we are.”
He said that one of the qualities he liked in West was his ability to recognize his mistakes and attempt to rectify them.
“That’s what I like about him,” he said. “He’s an honest person, he’s open and he’ll say things and he’s wrong a lot of times and he’ll confront it.”
He once said he didn’t agree with all the other rapper’s antics
Years before this dispute, Jay-Z commented on West’s public outbursts. He believed they were a part of his personality.
“He has extra passion – an extra-passion switch!” he told Rolling Stone in 2007.
He thought that West didn’t need to take things so far, but understood why he did.
“Some of the things he says, it’s unnecessary because of the level of success he’s attained,” he said. “But I know where he’s coming from. He’s fought all his life to tell people, ‘I’m great,’ so in his mind he’s still in that fight. He wants to be the best in the world.”
