Jenna Bush Hager recently jumped to the defense of the beloved animated character Shrek after learning about a new and somewhat unkind dating trend during an episode of Today with Jenna & Friends.
Alongside co-host Savannah Guthrie and Today enthusiast Tiffany Drummond, Bush Hager delved into current dating phenomena, one of which has been dubbed “Shrekking.”
“This seems like such a harsh trend,” Bush Hager remarked. “It involves dating someone perceived as less attractive in the hope that they will be more appreciative and treat their partner better.”
Guthrie chimed in, expressing her disapproval: “There is so much wrong with that.”
Bush Hager, defending the character’s charm, replied, “Exactly! Plus, Shrek is quite handsome,” garnering agreement from Drummond. “I think Shrek is adorable,” she added.
Guthrie seemed thrown off by Bush Hager and Drummond’s confession, but she tried to roll with it. “Well, yeah. I mean, okay, it’s offensive to Shrek,” she acknowledged. “And also, the person that you’re dating. At what point are you like, ‘I’m Shrekking you because I think I’m better looking than you?’ That’s just mean.”
Bush Hager noted that would be “the end of a relationship right there.”
The co-hosts then moved on to another dating trend that also seemed “a little mean” to Bush Hager: “Snowmanning.”
“It’s when someone rushes into relationship right around now when it gets like this fresh cool crisp air and you want them for the winter,” she explained, later adding, “When it gets warm out, you find somebody new.”
But Bush Hager and Guthrie wrapped up the conversation when it turned to another questionable dating trend known as “freak-matching.”
“This could go in a lot of directions,” Guthrie warned, seemingly noting this might not be suitable for a daytime television show like Today With Jenna & Friends.
Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
