He’s known for rapping about his lavish lifestyle and racing around in fast cars in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies.

But Will Smith’s motoring taste came under some serious scrutiny in an unearthed Top Gear clip which left his former Focus co-star Margot Robbie in stitches.

Appearing on the Star In A Reasonably Priced Car segment of the show in 2015 with his Australian colleague ahead of their film Focus, Will, then 46, could hardly have expected the grilling he got from Jeremy Clarkson, then 54, in front of a raucous studio audience.

A well-prepared Jeremy kicked off the grilling by asking: ‘What was your first car?’

Will replied: ‘A candy apple red [Chevrolet] IROC-Z, a Camaro. Apparently you don’t have those here.’

‘No we have…what’s the word? Er, taste,’ Jeremy lashed back.

The Camaro IROC-Z was a US-made affordable muscle car which was released every year from 1982 to 1992. 

‘I was thinking, “well maybe this would indicate you don’t know anything about cars”, then I started to look into some of the lyrics.

‘In a song called Getting Jiggy With It…’

‘I don’t recognise that one,’ Will butted in, poking fun at the Top Gear host’s pronunciation of his 1998 Grammy Award-winning hit.

‘It goes, “850iS…”,’ Jeremy continued.

‘850iS if you need a lift…’ Will recalled.

‘”…Who’s the kid in the drop?”,’ Jeremy recited. ‘Now drop I presume means drop top.’

Will said: ‘Drop top, yes.’

But Jeremy revealed: ‘They never did a drop top 850. It’s a small problem.’

At this point, the large crowd of petrolheads watching the segment erupted into laughter. 

Will hit back: ‘No, no, hold on. See now, he thinks he knows everything. In the United States, we do a thing where we customise our cars.’

Despite the audience’s approval of the grilling, the King Richard Oscar-winner was, in fact, right. The BMW 850i did have a number of recorded aftermarket conversions which involved adding a convertible top.

‘Can I just give you another one?’ Jeremy said. 

Margot, then 24, could barely contain her amusement as she enjoyed a front seat ticket for an A-lister roast session, saying: ‘This is brilliant.’

‘”Just cruising in the maestro…”‘ Jeremy began, reciting the words to Will’s 1997 hit Just Cruisin’ which reached number 23 in the UK singles charts.

‘Yes, yes, yes,’ Will recalled.

‘”…nice flow…”‘ Jeremy continued, before Will completed the rap, singing, ‘Nice flow, hot like nitro. Cool as ice, though’.

The Top Gear presenter then asked: ‘Do you know what a maestro is?’

‘Oh, you’ve got one?’ Will said, gobsmacked.

‘There you go,’ Jeremy added, pulling up a picture of an Austin Maestro, a classic British hatchback first released in 1982 which figured heavily in UK popular culture.

An entire episode of Channel 4 soap Brookside was dedicated to the car and in 1985 the opening titles of ITV soap Crossroads followed an MG-made version of the Maestro. 

‘Oh my God,’ a shocked Will said, with Margot almost crying with laughter in the seat next to him.

He added: ‘It is so awkward for me to hear you say my lyrics like that.’

Will and Margo were among the most high-profile stars to ever take to the Top Gear track, with the Ali actor getting a time of 1 minute 47.2 seconds, placing him high on the board between Warwick Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.

But Margo had him beat, flying round the track in 1 minute 47.1 seconds much to Will’s shock.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air icon made a career out of his laid-back demeanour, an image that was compromised at the 2022 Academy Awards when Will infamously slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage in response to a joke he made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which was due to her alopecia.

The Aladdin actor continued shouting profanities at Chris as he returned to his seat and repeatedly said: ‘Keep my wife’s name out [of] your f***ing mouth.’

Will later accepted his Best Actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard and apologised to the Academy for his behaviour.

The recently rediscovered clip comes after Will went viral as he recreated his iconic Fresh Prince of Bel-Air dance with former co-star Tatyana Ali and a surprise appearance from singer Doechii.

The duo brought back their silly ditty for a whole new generation in video posted to social media on Friday, which was set to the trending song Anxiety by Doechii, 26.

While the song delighted many fans, several took issue with Doechii’s appearance in the video and accused her of being an ‘industry plant.’ 

According to Urban Dictionary, an industry plant is defined as ‘an artist who has Major/Indie Label backing their movement but presents themselves as a “home grown start up” label to create a pseudo organic following. 

Addressing the allegations, Doechii recently told The Cut: ‘When people aren’t familiar with the history of an artist these days, they get suspicious.

‘I’m pretty detached emotionally from it because I understand where it’s coming from. And to be honest, once you get any conspiracies around your career, that’s just confirmation that I’m going somewhere and I’m doing something right.’

In Feburary, Will and Jada put on a unified front with their first joint message since he came under fire for an ‘inappropriate’ display with a female singer at the Premio Lo Nuestro award show in Miami. 

At the show last month, Will and the Spanish singer India Martínez put on a steamy display that seemingly culminated with a kiss, but some fans were irked due to his unusual marital relationship with Jada.

On Monday, she joined the 56-year-old A-list actor for a blended family photo as he marked National Napping Day.

She didn’t seem to hold any bad blood for her husband as they posed with their son Jaden, 26, and daughter Willow, 24.

Joining in the group photo to complete the family was Will’s oldest son, 32-year-old Trey Smith, from Will’s first marriage to Sheree Zampino, who also posed for the picture.

Although Will and Jada didn’t directly address his controversial kiss, the Matrix series star also got to poke fun at her husband in the cheeky snap.

Will, who wore a navy Adidas track suit with red stripes, was pictured snoozing on outdoors on a veranda while Jada, Sheree and the children all made joking gestures at him.

Jada, 53, who sported bleached blond hair and eyebrows, pointed down at her husband and stuck her tongue out as if to playfully mock him.

‘Someone say it was national napping day?’ Will captioned the photo.

The latest display of family unity was particularly striking, as Will and Jada have still left an air of mystery about their relationship.

In 2020, Jada admitted to carrying on a multi-year affair with the musician Alsina during a period when she and Will were separated.

He later admitted to his own extramarital affairs, and in late 2023, Jada clarified that the two had been separated going all the way back to 2016, though she said they don’t have any plans to divorce.
