Even the remoteness of a Southwest village couldn’t deter Oprah Winfrey from crafting a personalized baby shower gift for her dear friend Julia Roberts.
Julia Roberts, celebrated for her Academy Award-winning roles and dedication to philanthropy, is also a devoted mother of three and, surprisingly, an avid follower of Bravo’s reality TV shows. At 57, she recently graced Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where she eagerly shared her thoughts on the Real Housewives series. Amidst the lively chat, Roberts also opened up about her enduring friendship with Oprah Winfrey.
Julia Roberts says ‘only Oprah’ could pull off her special baby shower gift
During her appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Roberts was there to promote her latest film, After the Hunt, but she also offered glimpses into her personal life. The Golden Globe winner confessed her admiration for Bravo, delighting viewers with a comedic take on Sutton Stracke’s iconic phrase, “Name ’em.” A curious fan asked her during the show, “Since you’re such good friends with Oprah, what’s your favorite Oprah story or memory?”
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live, Julia Roberts promoted her new movie, After the Hunt. She also pulled back the curtain on her personal life. The Golden Globe Award winner revealed her love for Bravo, giving a humorous impersonation of Sutton Stracke’s infamous line, “Name ’em.” During the taping, a viewer asked the actress, “Since you’re such good friends with Oprah, what’s your favorite Oprah story or memory?”
“Oh, wow! Well, my favorite story I probably wouldn’t share here,” Roberts laughed. “But I will say this: She could not come to our baby shower. We live in a very remote place. She somehow managed to — in a place that you cannot even send me a nice bouquet of flowers on my birthday — she got a truck to pull up late at night and had two chests, beautiful chests with baby things — one for Finn and one for Hazel — delivered. And we were all just looking at the trucker and the truck and the things. And we were just like, ‘Only Oprah could do this.’”
Julia Roberts has referred to Oprah as a friend in multiple interviews. For example, in 2011, Roberts told Extra TV, via Business Insider, “I’ve made a lifelong friend in that woman. I think she’s one of the highlights of humankind. I’m lucky that she’s my pal.”
Roberts lives in a remote area of New Mexico
Julia Roberts was likely referring to her remote New Mexico home, a ranch in the Taos area near a 200-year-old community called Arroyo Seco. The northern New Mexico retreat is approximately 32 acres. After first buying the property in the ’90s, she’s acquired multiple adjacent parcels over time, including land owned by former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. The Taos ranch serves more as a retreat away from Hollywood, offering space, privacy, and seclusion.
In fact, Roberts married her husband, Danny Moder, there on July 4, 2002, in a relatively private ceremony without many celebrity guests. A deeply meaningful place to the Ticket to Paradise star, Roberts has reportedly described the ranch (or that region) as being where she feels most herself. It’s a place she returns to, for family, peace, nature, away from the spotlight. Locals have described Roberts as preferring a lifestyle in Taos that is quieter, private, and “country.” It would certainly take a lot of effort for Oprah to get a truck full of bespoke baby gifts to this remote area.
