Kamora Freeland is continuing to raise the bar of #blackexcellence. First, the 17-year-old made history last year by becoming the youngest African-American female to earn a private pilot’s license. Now, she is doing it all over again but this time, skipping her freshman year in college and becoming a sophomore at Spelman.

“Starting college as a sophomore has been a whirlwind of emotions—exciting, overwhelming, and liberating all at once,” Freeland told the Advance/SILive.com about attending the prestigious HBCU in a recent interview.

“It’s like stepping into a whole new world where you’re figuring out who you are, balancing independence, and navigating friendships, academics, and late-night study sessions.”

In addition to her many accolades, Freeland is also a birthing doula and lifeguard; however, her passion is unquestionably being a pilot.

“I love flying, and I have a passion for it,” Freeland said last year in response to obtaining her pilots license as the youngest African American female to do so. “Plus, pilots can make up to $700,000, so that caught my attention, too. The next step is to become a commercial airline pilot.”

Yet, Freeland didn’t start out wanting to become a pilot, in actuality, the talented young woman wanted to originally pursue a career in Marine Biology, but that changed after her first flight lesson in 2021 at the age of 15.

“I never wanted to be a pilot, but after my first flight, I was like, ‘Wow! I could do this for a living.’”

Lakema Freeland, Freeland’s mother, said in the same Advance/SILive.com interview that seeing her daughter start college as a sophomore is truly a “bittersweet moment.”

“I’m so proud of her for taking that big step, but my heart aches knowing the house is a little quieter without her laughter. It’s a mix of excitement for her future and the longing to hold on to the moments we’ve shared.”

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this incredibly talented young woman. There’s no doubt that the sky is nowhere near the limit for her.
