As many royal fans have said, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) and Meghan Markle‘s relationship deteriorated right before our eyes. While the public once believed the two women got along well and shared a sister-in-law bond over their unique experience of being married to British princes, Meghan made it clear that wasn’t the case.

In her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, the former Suits star insisted the princess “made her cry” during a bridesmaid dress fitting. She also told Winfrey that all the pictures of them laughing together weren’t what they seemed. Six months after that televised interview, the women came face to face and did an impromptu walkabout in Windsor with their husbands following Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

Crowds assembled outside Windsor Castle were stunned when they saw Prince William, Prince Harry, Kate, and Meghan arriving together and viewing tributes to the late monarch. Although they tried to put on their best faces, Kate let Meghan know how she was feeling about her after the walkabout with one cold stare .

The blink-and-you-miss-it moment that went viral showed Kate glaring at her sister-in-law and taking a step toward her before turning and waving goodbye to the crowd. Meghan actually looked frightened by the move and backed away from the princess.

Social media users were divided on how they felt about the tense exchange.

“This is my favorite Princess Catherine move, just one step and she said everything she needed to, without speaking a word. That is class!” one royal fan commented.

But others found the Princess of Wales’ move a bit “scary,” posting: “A little scary how quickly Kate transitions from icily staring down Meghan to smiling and waving to the crowd.”

“Meghan looks truly alarmed,” another person chimed in.

And a fourth person echoed what many hope happens in the future, writing: “I pray these two ladies are able to sort out their differences.”

Body language and behavioral expert Judi James analyzed the moment the Princess of Wales stared down the Duchess of Sussex, and noted that Meghan appeared so nervous that she took two steps backward away from Kate before Harry grabbed her arm. She also broke down the role each of the princes and their wives played that.

“This is a phenomenal and unexpected scene that displays some natural caution and awkwardness in the body language,” James told Femail. “The four line up together to suggest some form of unity and it is William, with his puffed chest and air of confidence, who looks like the leader and instigator.”

James added: “Harry performs some clothing touch anxiety rituals, but Meghan seems to be on hand to offer comfort, support, and encouragement. Kate looks slightly distanced, although she is close to William when the couples split slightly.”
