Kaye Adams jokes about losing radio show after BBC 'bullying probe'

Kaye Adams, currently facing scrutiny, humorously remarked about possibly losing her radio show amid a BBC investigation into alleged bullying, quipping, “I’m too old for this nonsense.”

The 62-year-old presenter of Loose Women was removed from her position on BBC Radio Scotland in October after accusations emerged regarding her treatment of colleagues.

In a recent installment of her podcast, How To Be 60, Adams had a conversation with Scottish resident Karen Mackenzie, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy. During the discussion, Adams offered to accompany Mackenzie for her final treatment session before Christmas.

Mackenzie playfully declined, saying, “No, you can’t come; you might disrupt it. Just stay where you are.”

Adams responded with humor, asking, “Why? Don’t you think everyone would be thrilled to see me?” Mackenzie jokingly replied that people might not even recognize her.

Kaye said: ‘[They’ll say] ‘Did she used to be on the radio?’ Yeah!

Karen replies: ‘Moving on!’ as Kaye says: ‘Alright, I can take a hint.’

Kaye was removed from her £155,000-a-year job hosting the BBC morning radio show while bosses conduct an inquiry into complaints from junior colleagues that she ‘shouted and screamed’ at them.

It is believed the complaints were raised under the BBC’s Call It Out scheme to address bad behaviour in the workplace – an initiative set up in the aftermath of the scandal over former MasterChef presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

BBC Scotland refused to comment on the allegations against former Strictly contestant Kaye but confirmed she had not left the organisation permanently.

A spokesman added: ‘We would not comment on any individual case. If any complaints or concerns are raised we have robust internal processes in place to manage these.’

One senior BBC source told The Mail on Sunday Ms Adams is not expected back on air for at least two weeks while the investigation continues.

After we contacted Ms Adams, her spokesman said ‘no complaints had been presented to her by the BBC’.

He added: ‘Further, she has worked for BBC Radio Scotland for more than 15 years and in that time has never had any issue raised about her.’

Last week, Kaye said she’s cancelling Christmas and during her new podcast she spoke about going to a restaurant with Jane Moore and avoiding Xmas revellers.

Sounding down in the dumps, Kaye said: ‘Jane Moore and I were talking about stuff. I was staying at her house last week actually. I was down in London quite a bit, and we were just kind of talking away.

‘The number of times the two of us said to each other ‘I’m too old for this s**t! I’m too old for this s**t!’ It’s stuff like that…. Everyone knows there’s…. “Oh, i’m terribly sorry, I hope I didn’t spoil your birthday and I hope you had a lovely day’” ‘

‘Well, yes, actually it was cr*p because I thought I was going there and actually I didn’t, I ended up at that pizza place and it was rubbish.

So let’s not all be ‘”ooooo”, you know. We all talk s**t these days don’t we? This sort of public way of speaking is not very direct anymore. It’s all just polite corporate speak.

‘I have to say you couldn’t accuse Jane Moore of not being direct though. So we went out for a meal near to where she lives. We had this little table for two she had booked.

‘And then we saw that next to us was a party of 12 clearly gonna be a Christmas thing that was coming in. We were both looking at it thinking ‘oh, any minute now it’s gonna be “Merry Christmas!”

‘And Jane’s kind of eyeing it up and she said “I’m gonna see if we can get a table through the back that’s quieter’” I said “okay then’”

‘So I just kinda sloped off towards the back, and I heard her saying to the waitress Could we move somewhere quieter please because my friend is deaf’” which is technically true.

‘I’m just standing there like a complete spare part, just listening to her say “my friend is deaf and we need to go somewhere quiet.” I thought “this is it. We’ve really plumbed the depths now!” “We don’t want any jollity or Christmas spirit or anything because my friend is deaf.”

‘It’s funny, they were there when we came out and they were sort of smiling at us and you know we were sort of smiling back but making a quick kind of exit. It was quite funny.’

Kaye has been a long-standing presenter of ITV’s daytime talkshow Loose Women –  – and also works for the BBC as a freelance presenter as well as hosting her phone-in show on BBC Radio Scotland, a job she has had since 2010.

She now occupies the 9am to midday slot several days a week with a show called Mornings With Kaye Adams, but has not been on air since October 6.

Sources confirmed she was asked to attend a meeting with the station’s new head of audio, Victoria Easton Riley, on October 8.

A BBC source said: ‘The meeting did not go well and Kaye stormed out. She hasn’t been back since and she’s not been on air.’

HR officials have already started interviewing staff about the allegations.

Another senior BBC Scotland source said: ‘Kaye has been taken off air, she’s gone.

‘There have been complaints about her behaviour, and they’ve removed her while they investigate it. It’s being talked about all over Pacific Quay [BBC Scotland’s headquarters].

‘After the Gregg Wallace fiasco, they’re now getting much tougher on complaints about the talent and are starting to take these things seriously.’

Gregg was sacked after 45 allegations of misconduct against him spanning 19 years were upheld. They included one incident of unwelcome physical contact, three complaints of being in a state of undress and others involving inappropriate sexual, culturally insensitive or racist comments.

He was sacked along with John, who was found to have used an extremely offensive racist term.

A BBC Radio Scotland source said: ‘The Call It Out campaign is everywhere now and that’s what has prompted people to come forward about Kaye.’

Last year, Kaye won a ten-year battle with HMRC over a £124,000 tax bill, after courts found she was right to be classed as a freelance worker when she hosted the BBC Radio Scotland programme from 2013 to 2017.  During that case it was revealed she was paid £155,000 to present at least 160 programmes for the broadcaster.

Kaye supports a number of charities including the Beatson Cancer charity; Kindred, which helps parents of children with complex needs; and family support charity Home-Start Glasgow North and North Lanarkshire.

She lives in Glasgow with her partner, tennis coach Ian Campbell. The couple have two daughters. She has been replaced on air by Connie McLaughlin.
