Kelly Rowland was honored at the 12th Annual amfAR Gala in West Hollywood on Thursday (Nov. 3). The event, held at the Pacific Design Center, was dedicated to the support of HIV/AIDS research.

Rowland’s husband, Tim Weatherspoon, and their son, Titus Weatherspoon, support her at the gala. The recording artist was given the amfAR Award of Courage for her efforts.
Some may know about Kelly Rowland losing a loved one to AIDS. The singer discussed her experience during an interview with Hello Giggles in 2017.

“I’ve always been very passionate about just spreading the awareness,” Kelly shared in reference to knowledge pertaining to HIV/AIDS. “They show sex all day long on TV, but there’s no one really telling you what are the responsibilities that go with it,” she added.

“You look at the stats on HIV, and how it’s not really changing, and how the numbers are higher in women,” Rowland shared. “I wanted to be a part of getting the word out,” she told the press.
Kelly partnered with Johnson and Johnson for an HIV/AIDS campaign five years ago. She has also taken to her social media platforms to bolster World AIDS Day, which also spreads awareness about the illness.

More than 650,000 people in the United States died from AIDS-related illnesses last year. The number, although grand, was a significant deduction from 2004 when more than 2 million people in the United States died from complications related to the condition.

The amfAR, professionally known as The Foundation for AIDS Research, carries the mission of ending AIDS on a global scale. To date, the nonprofit has given upwards of $617 million to research efforts geared towards finding a cure for the illness. More than 3,500 grants have been awarded to research teams through the amfAR to further aid in the organization’s ultimate goal. You can learn more about The Foundation for AIDS Research here!
