The original film, released in July 1997, was based on the comedy sketch of the same name on the Nickelodeon series All That.

It received mixed reviews from critics but was commercially successful at the box office, grossing $23.7 million against a budget of $8.5 million.

In the years since its release, Good Burger gained a cult following, particularly among millennials who grew up with the comedy film and the television series.

In the original, Mitchell played the role of Ed, the teenaged cashier at Good Burger, while Thompson, left audiences laughing as Dexter Reed, a 16-year-old high school student.

For the sequel, the story follows  Dexter and Ed (Thompson and Mitchell) as they reunite in the present day at fast-food restaurant Good Burger with a new group of employees.

Directed by Brian Robbins from a screenplay by Dan Schneider, Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert for the first movie, this go-around sees Phil Traill (The Middle, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Single Drunk Female) at the helm, with Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert (All That and Good Burger) serving as writers and executive producers.

Along with their duties as the two lead actors, Thompson and Mitchell will also be involved in another creative capacity.

Production will begin in May, and the premiere is slated to drop later this year.

While his Hollywood resume is filled with roles in comedies dating back to his debut in the sports comedy-drama movie, D2: The Mighty Ducks, Thompson is best known to most fans for being part of the Saturday Night Live cast.

After joining the SNL in 2003, he now has the distinction of being the longest-running castmate in the show’s history.

The Columbus, Ohio native is also the first regular cast member born after the show’s premiere in 1975.

Mitchell was the original castmember of the Nickelodeon sketch comedy All That for its five season run from 1994 to 1999.

During the series, he was often paired up with Thompson, most notably the sketch Mavis and Clavis.

It was his role as Ed in the All That sketch that sparked the 1997 Good Burger film.
