Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California, to parents Kenneth Duckworth and Paula Oliver.
Lamar was interested in hip-hop since he was a child and drew inspiration from Tupac Shakur, Nas, DMX, and Dr. Dre. In high school, he began battle rapping and recording his music. His early mixtapes, under the name K. Dot, caught the attention of Dre who played a pivotal role in launching his career.
In 2011, Lamar released his debut albumSection.80 and was dubbed the “New King of the West Coast” by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and The Game. He has released a handful of other albums since and was the producer and curator of the Black Panther soundtrack.
