Kim Kardashian kicked off the New Year in style, turning heads in Aspen with a classic Roberto Cavalli coat.

Kim Kardashian seems to have missed an important message.

After recently drawing criticism from PETA for gifting each of her four children a puppy this past Christmas, Kardashian is again under scrutiny for a move likely to upset animal rights advocates.

Kim Kardashian wears vintage Roberto Cavalli in Aspen

On New Year’s Day, the SKIMS founder was spotted out and about in Aspen. She bundled up in a long vintage Roberto Cavalli fur coat over leather pants and a corset. She topped it off with a dramatic fur scarf. The coat alone likely cost close to $10,000, Page Six noted.

Kardashian’s coat appeared to be made of real fur. But there’s a chance it’s not the real thing. In 2019, she announced on Instagram that she “took all of my fave furs and remade them in faux fur.”

Kardashian’s choice of outwear came not long after Indrid Newkirk, who founded People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, publicly slammed her for buying her kids dogs as a holiday gift. Newkirk was disappointed that The Kardashians star didn’t use her platform to promote adopting a rescue animal.

“Puppies are not plushies, and it’s a damn shame that Kim missed the chance to be a spokesperson for shelter pups and instead is being rightly slammed on social media for that,” Newkirk told People.

Kim’s sister Khloé Kardashian also got her family a dog for Christmas. Newkirk suggested the siblings teach their kids a lesson about animal ownership in the new year.

[They can] try to make some amends now by sending their kids to volunteer at a local shelter or paying for a local shelter adopt-a-thon or at least one spay day to help stop the growing homeless puppy crisis,” she said.

PETA has criticized Kim Kardashian for wearing fur in the past

This isn’t the first time PETA has taken aim at Kardashian. In 2011, the group put up a billboard in Los Angeles calling her out for wearing fur. The ad featured Kardashian wearing fur next to pictures of baby foxes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Kim: These Babies Miss Their Mother. Is She on Your Back?” the billboard read.

“Kim knows that animals on fur farms are beaten, electrocuted, and often skinned alive. We’ve explained it to her, and she’s watched a video exposé that was filmed inside fur farms,” PETA SVP Lisa Lange said. “When Kim is ready to put an end to her relationship with fur, PETA will be happy to take her discards and donate them to the homeless.”
