Senator Musa Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, has officially announced his departure from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately. This decision marks a significant shift in his political career.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso explained that his resignation was driven by the need for a strategic realignment in response to the changing dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape. He emphasized that this was not an easy decision but a necessary one in order to adapt to the current political climate.
Kwankwaso expressed his gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunities afforded to him, particularly highlighting his roles as the party’s National Leader and their presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections. Despite his departure, he acknowledged the valuable experiences and memories gained during his tenure with the party.
The senator underscored the importance of aligning with a political platform that could more effectively champion national change, suggesting that the evolving nature of Nigerian politics required such a move. This new direction, he believes, will better position him to influence the future of Nigeria.
According to him, the current trajectory of the nation’s politics necessitated identifying with another political platform that offers a better opportunity to effectively pursue national change.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.
However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
