Lenny Kravitz was born on May 26, 1964, in New York City to parents Sy Kravitz and Roxie Roker. His father was a TV producer and his mother played Helen Willis on the sitcom The Jeffersons. Through his mother, Kravitz is second cousins with weatherman Al Roker. 

Kravitz became interested in music at an early age. When he was 10, his family relocated to Los Angeles and he began singing in the California Boys Choir. He also played the piano, the guitar, and drums. Some of his influences include the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix.

He signed with Virgin Records in 1989, released his first album later that year, and has been turning out hits ever since.
