Saw XI is reportedly dead in the water.

The 11th installment in the bloody Saw franchise has been canceled at Lionsgate, according to a report by Bloody Disgusting.

“It’s totally dead,” an inside source close to production told the outlet. “It’s 100% over. Almost a year now.”

Saw 11 was announced in 2023 shortly after Saw X‘s box office performance exceeded expectations, earning $112 million globally. The new sequel was announced with a theatrical premiere date set for Sept. 27, 2024, but that was later pushed back a year to September 2025.

According to the source, production began to go “sideways” in January 2024. “The producers started fighting,” they said, claiming one producer tried to “plow forward” with production on Saw XI while the other producer “put up roadblocks.”

The studio reportedly did not get involved to mediate. “[Lionsgate] didn’t have anyone to smooth over the disagreement,” the insider claimed. Ultimately, “Greed and ego won,” according to the production insider, adding that the installment can be sold elsewhere but they would likely have to “start over.”

It is unclear which producers were involved in Saw XI, but director Kevin Greutert was once again attached to direct. Actors Tobin Bell and Costas Mandylor were also set to reprise their roles.

The last installment of Saw showed a new side of its lead antagonist, whose deteriorating health played a central role to his character throughout the series.

Saw X shows John Kramer traveling to Mexico to undergo a potentially lifesaving experimental medical procedure. Except the murderer quickly learns it was all part of an elaborate operation meant to scam the most vulnerable. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t take long for Jigsaw to execute his own plan for revenge on the scammers involved.

After Saw XI was first announced in 2023, Greutert teased that the next installment likely “picks up immediately where this one leaves off, but it’s way too early to tell,” he said, per Variety.

A recent report from Scream Magazine also claimed Saw XI was not going to meet its 2025 premiere date “unless something major changes” behind the scenes. The outlet also claimed there were growing concerns over Bell’s advancing age, as the longtime actor recently turned 81.

But Bell recently confirmed in October 2024 that he was certainly involved in Saw XI.

“I’m really excited about continuing to develop him,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “John Kramer is not done. There’s more to learn.”
