Royal family
A lip-reading expert uncovers the question the Duke of Sussex asked his cousin at King Charles’ coronation.
Following his decision to step down as a working royal and amid the rift with his family, Prince Harry remained very close with his cousin, Princess Eugenie.
The princess and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, are believed to be the only family members who have visited the Sussexes at their home in California. A few years back, they were all photographed having dinner together in Santa Barbara, and Eugenie even appeared briefly in the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.
On May 6, 2023, the Duke of Sussex attended King Charles III’s coronation and was seen speaking with Eugenie and Brooksbank before and after the ceremony.
Now, a professional lip reader is taking a look back at what they said to each other that day.
Lip-reading expert decodes what Prince Harry asked Princess Eugenie
When Prince Harry arrived at Westminster Abbey for his father and Queen Camilla’s coronation, he was greeted by Eugenie and Brooksbank, as well as Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, before walking inside together.
The lip reader analyzed a clip of Harry talking to Eugenie and Brooksbank before and after the coronation. In Lip-Reading The Royals: The Secret Conversations, the lip-reading pro noticed Harry say to Eugenie, “I’ve spent five hours with my dad in his office and not a friendly text from either.”
Besides King Charles, it’s unclear who else the prince was talking about when he said “either” but it’s not far-fetched to assume he was talking about his brother, Prince William, and sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton).
According to the expert, Harry then uttered a five-word question to his cousin, asking: “Why hasn’t anybody contacted me?”
Eugenie, who was pregnant with her second child at the time, responded with a sympathetic smile.
What Harry was seen saying to Eugenie’s husband that day
The Duke of Sussex had an even more lengthy conversation with Princess Eugenie’s hubby inside the Abbey that day. And another lip reader decoded what he said to Brooksbank as they waited for the ceremony to get underway.
The Daily Star‘s lip-reading expert observed Brooksbank saying something to Harry about his wife, Meghan, asking: “And is she?” To which Harry nodded and replied: “It’s not ideal.”
The expert noted that Brooksbank then said: “If it makes you feel any better even I can do it. It’s not quite the life, is it?” The prince shook his head before Brooksbank added: “I haven’t had time for that, not if it’s over.” Harry responded: “It’s an eventuality.”
The lip reader also spotted the duke admitting that he wasn’t happy with how certain things had played out, saying: “It’s sad. I’m fed up. I’ve tried talking to him.”
The lip reader could only decipher bits and pieces of their conversation because so many other people were walking in front of them. And while it’s not exactly clear what they were discussing, it’s believed Harry was referring to his dad or sibling when he insisted that he was “fed up.”
