Lucy Liu doubled down on the statements she made against Bill Murray in 2021, when she revealed her Charlie’s Angels co-star had made a number of “unacceptable” comments towards her on set in 1999.

Speaking to The Guardian now, Liu stood by her decision to defend herself against Murray’s attacks.

“I really didn’t think about it,” Liu said about the situation in a story published yesterday (Jan. 13). “I would’ve done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself. It’s an innate thing to do if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way.”

She continued, “If I was, it would have been a much easier road. But because I’ve never been that person, we had to find a way. There has never been an easy road, for me and for [other Asian American actors] – I really think it’s a group effort. I would never take credit. My career has not been paved by myself.”

Liu made headlines when she first shared the altercation she had with Murray on the Los Angeles Times podcast Asian Enough a few years ago. The actress explained at the time that they were rehearsing a scene together that had been rewritten that past weekend, when Murray wasn’t present.

She clarified that she had little to do with the rewrites, but Murray began to “hurl insults” at her because of the changes.

Liu did not specify what exactly was said, but she recalled, “I was, like, ‘Wow, he seems like he’s looking straight at me.’ I couldn’t believe that [his comments] could be towards me, because what do I have to do with anything majorly important at that time?”

“I say, ‘I’m so sorry. Are you talking to me?’—and clearly he was, because then it started to become a one-on-one communication,” she continued. Liu said Murray’s language “was inexcusable and unacceptable.”

“I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it,” she said. “Because no matter how low on the totem pole you may be or wherever you came from, there’s no need to condescend or to put other people down.”

Soon after Liu spoke about the actor, production on Aziz Ansari’s film Being Mortal halted over Murray’s allegedly “inappropriate behavior.” He also exited Wes Anderson‘s Asteroid City under similarly suspicious circumstances.

Additionally, Murray reportedly paid a settlement “just north of $100,000″ to a young woman who accused him of “kissing her body and straddling her.” While Murray maintained that he was “just being jestful,” the young production staffer described the experience as “entirely sexual.”
