Maika Monroe, known for her role in the film It Follows, recently shared that the eagerly anticipated sequel, They Follow, although announced in 2023, has yet to commence filming.
During a conversation with Decider, Monroe expressed her hopes for production to start next year, saying, “Rumor has it, perhaps next year.” She added, “I don’t want to delve into all the scheduling details, but everyone’s been quite busy.”
Monroe confirmed she has read the script for the sequel, describing it as “incredible.” She passionately stated, “I truly believe this movie deserves to be made because fans will be thrilled. It’s outstanding. Fingers crossed it comes together!”
The original 2014 film, It Follows, featuring Monroe as a woman tormented by a mysterious force, evolved from a modest indie project to a cult favorite, earning acclaim as one of the standout horror films of the past decade. Both Monroe and the film’s writer-director, David Robert Mitchell, are confirmed to reprise their roles in the sequel.
Although They Follow was initially set to begin filming in 2024, plans shifted to 2025, and now it appears production is delayed yet another year. While this isn’t the update fans hoped for, it seems the postponement is merely a result of scheduling conflicts.
Monroe has certainly been booked and busy. The actor is currently promoting her new Hulu film with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, a 2025 remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Coming up, she will star in a new Colleen Hoover romance, Reminders of Him; a drama, Place to Be; and another horror film with Thomasin McKenzie, and Jason Isaacs, Victorian Psycho. Meanwhile, writer/director David Robert Mitchell has been busy filming his upcoming sci-fi flick with Anne Hathaway, Flowervale Street.
In other words, don’t give up hope yet. Once the schedules align, we’ll hopefully see They Follow headed into production soon.
