Man drives TikTok crazy with ‘underhand knock’ trend
Share and Follow

A man on TikTok has challenged the way we knock on doors, and the Internet can’t handle it.

The trend started on different platforms from different people, but the original came from the Reddit thread r/Showerthoughts. The subreddit describes itself as the place for “sharing those miniature epiphanies you have that highlight the oddities within the familiar.”

Reddit user u/frogking_ certainly had one of those epiphanies when he told the subreddit, “You don’t have to raise your hand when knocking on the door.”

That post got over 16,000 upvotes and prompted many people on the Internet to realize they don’t have to knock overhand.

The person who brought this conclusion to TikTok was @joetownsend9, who wrote, “Me explaining that you don’t have to raise your hand when knocking on someone’s door” in the video text of his TikTok. That video now has over 9 million views and over 1 million likes.

Now that this thought is out in the world, people have been changing the way they knock.

Nick Fleetwood (@nickfleetwood) posted a video of him doing so, and his comments took it a step further and described the myriad of ways to knock on doors.

“Personally I prefer the backhand mid level knock,” said @psybin75.

“I hit that middle knuckle speed bag 3 combo,” said @ayeyobroc.

While some people in the comments have adopted a different style of knocking, others still prefer the traditional way and are vocal about their preference.

“Underhand knock ? red flag,” said @jozzrenee under @joetownsend9’s video.

“I’m glad we all irrationally despise the underhand knock I feel safe here,” said @orep47 underneath the same video.

This has easily become a low-stakes, controversial topic — like deciding if water is wet or if a straw has one hole or two. Still, users are finding out which knock works for them, which didn’t seem like something they needed to figure out until recently.
