A young man has gone viral on social media after a video captured the unusual way he attempted to collect Hilda Baci’s Jollof rice at her recent event.

In the short clip, he is seen stretching both hands through the bars of an iron gate to scoop up rice, only to realise that he could not easily pull his hands back out without spilling the food.

The scene quickly became the centre of attention online, with many amused viewers pointing out that the man seemed so desperate for the food that he failed to consider how he would retrieve it.

Popular influencer, #OurFavOnlineDoc, who shared the video, joked that “sometimes hunger can make a person daft,” sparking a wave of banter across X (formerly Twitter).

Debate over desperation and fun

While some users mocked the man’s predicament as peak foolishness, others argued that not everything should be taken too seriously.

One commenter suggested that the situation reflected how hunger can drive people to act without proper planning, while another insisted that life is meant to be enjoyed even if it means looking foolish in the process.

The clip also inspired creative solutions from some netizens. One advised that the man could simply mould the rice into a ball, release one hand, and then use the other to pull it back through the gate describing the move as a “smart conversion” of the situation. Still, many found humour in the fact that such an ordinary scene could become the highlight of the day online.

Social media reactions

Reactions flooded the timeline as users dissected the man’s hilarious blunder:

S.A.L.A.K.O: “How will he remove his hands?”

OurFavOnlineDoc: “A total fool”

Kingsley Ifeanyi Umeh: “Sometimes no be hunger… Life’s fun though.”

OurFavOnlineDoc (replying): “In the next edition, go and be the fool that will become the face of stupidity on national media.”

The Oracle’s Messenger: “Just mould the rice into a ball and use one hand to retrieve it. Simple.”

Another user: “E no concern you how he want take remove the hand. Put rice there first.”

Stephen Osemwegie: “Renewed Hope

The viral video continues to trend with thousands of views, proving once again that everyday struggles with food especially Jollof rice will never fail to amuse Nigerians.
