Meena Harris first introduced readers to Maya in her book “Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea.” Now, she’s expanding on Maya’s story with a new book titled “Maya’s Big Question,” which explores the themes of curiosity and the art of asking profound questions.
Harris unveiled the book’s cover on Instagram, giving a sneak peek into what Maya’s latest adventure entails.
“The story follows a young girl named Maya, who you might recognize! She takes pride in being a curious child who enjoys posing questions. On a school field trip to see monuments, Maya observes something missing and is inspired to create her own. You might wonder how a youngster could accomplish such a feat. It requires creativity and community, and Maya is just the person to make it happen!”
In an interview with Parents.com, Harris elaborated on the book’s purpose, emphasizing its educational value.
“The overarching aim—and how I envision the book being used as a practical tool—is to encourage children to question the status quo,” Harris explained. “If, based on your unique experience or observation, you notice something and have a distinctive question about it, that’s incredibly empowering. Ask all sorts of questions and recognize the tremendous power in doing so, particularly if no one else is asking the same thing.”
Harris, who has now released five books, said this project pushed her to build on what she learned from earlier work.
“I took the learnings from the first book and thought about, ‘OK, how do I add nuance to this or keep building?’” says Meena in the interview. “Part of that was getting so much great feedback from educators and teachers and parents around how they were really using my book as a tool. It’s nice to know it’s having the impact that I intended.”
