Monica and her daughter Laiyah are channeling the spirit of the ’90s in their latest project.
The iconic duo stepped into the spotlight for a retro-inspired photo session, celebrating Monica’s upcoming performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.

Laiyah took to Instagram to share a series of photos from the shoot, where both were seen in matching, custom-designed brown MCM outfits.
One snapshot captured them beside a classic SUV, while another highlighted Laiyah striking a solo pose.

In her caption, the 12-year-old expressed her love for the ’90s, calling herself a true ’90s girl at heart.
“90’s girl at heart, just like my mama!” she wrote alongside the photos.
Monica responded directly to her daughter in the comments, writing, “MY FAVORITE GIRL. @laiyah I Love You … you’ve been lifting me up and holding it down so grateful God chose me to be your mommy.”

The singer also posted photos from the weekend on her own Instagram account, including one image with Brandy. The longtime friends reunited at Roots Picnic after Brandy surprised fans by bringing Monica out as a special guest during her set. The pair performed Monica’s hit song “So Gone.”
“I Promised You I Would Be There. Rayana & Denise = #BRONICA,” Monica wrote.

Monica and Laiyah’s custom MCM pieces were created by stylist Misa Hylton, who later shared photos from the collaboration and explained the inspiration behind the look.
“This custom MCM x Misa Hylton design was created to celebrate a woman whose style has always been her own,” Hylton wrote. “Created for Monica’s guest performance alongside Brandy at The Roots Picnic, this one-of-one custom design draws inspiration from the bold individuality, confidence, and street-luxury spirit that defined an era.”
Hylton added, “Seeing her share this moment alongside Laiyah made the story even more meaningful. Two generations. One story. Infinite influence. Because true style isn’t about trends. It’s about legacy.”
