New Netflix smash hit film KPop Demon Hunters sparked mayhem in movie theaters over the weekend with singalong screenings as the movie topped the box office.

In the film, three members of a superstar South Korean girl pop group Huntr/x lead double lives as demon hunters.

The group are faced with the greatest challenge of their lives in the form of a five-piece boy band, Saja Boys – demons in disguise who plan to devour the souls of their fans. 

After becoming one of the most successful programs in Netflix history – the film had a limited theatrical release with more than 1,000 sold-out screenings across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. 

The screenings propelled KPop Demon Hunters to the top of the US box office over the weekend – with fans branding the shows the ‘closest thing to a rave for kids.’

One fan wrote: ‘WILD night! K-POP DEMON HUNTERS big-screen sing-along was completely sold out and the closest thing prepubescents get to a throwing a rave. There were glow sticks, there was dancing, and my goodness was there singing!

Others penned: ‘My favorite moment from the K-Pop Demon Hunters sing-a-long: when all the tiny dancers and singers at my theater started chanting “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” after “Free.”

Per THR, the film’s limited two day theatrical release has grossed $18 million to $20 million from 1,700 North American theaters, the ‘highest showing of any movie over the Aug. 22-24 weekend, according to exhibition sources and rival studios.’

KPop Demon Hunters is already the streaming giant’s most-watched animated English-language film of all time and is on course to become its biggest-ever hit.

 Since Netflix’s charts are calculated based on the first 91 days of viewing, KPop Demon Hunters has until mid-September to leapfrog ahead of its three rivals – the 2021 action comedy Red Notice, 2024 airport thriller Carry-On and 2021 sci-fi comedy Don’t Look Up.

The movie’s bubblegum pop soundtrack has done even better,  – songs by the warring bands Huntr/x and Saja Boys currently occupy six of the top 50 spots of America’s Billboard Top 100 and three of the Top Ten slots in the UK. 

The latter include Saja Boys’ Soda Pop and Your Idol but the standout hit has been Huntr/x’s Golden which topped the US Billboard Hot 100.
