Netflix’s latest cancellation has many people scratching their heads.
On Monday, fans learned that the streamer would not be renewing The Waterfront for season 2. The soapy family drama from Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson was released in June 2025 and seemed to perform well, so it’s something of a shock that more episodes aren’t in the works.

Deadline was first to report the news of The Waterfront’s cancellation, noting that the decision was “surprising” given that the show attracted a respectable audience on Netflix.
The Waterfront debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s top 10 streaming chart and remained in the top 10 for five weeks. It had 11.6 million views in its first full week of its release. That’s a higher number than comparable series Ransom Canyon and Forever, both of which will be returning for a second season. However, Netflix apparently wasn’t satisfied with the viewership and completion rate for The Waterfront, Deadline reports.
The Waterfront, which was inspired by true events, focuses on the Buckleys, a North Carolina family struggling to hold on to their fading fishing empire. It stars Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, and Jake Weary.

On social media, fans of The Waterfront expressed their disappointment and frustration that Netflix had decided not to move forward with with season 2 and share more of the Buckley family’s story.
“This one hurts…” one person commented on Instagram.
“What was it cancelled?” wrote another confused viewer. “It was doing so well.”
“I’m heartbroken!! And what makes it worse is the show WAS a big hit!” someone else commented.
“This is non sense bruh look at how well it did worldwide, i dont get it,” agreed another viewer.
Meanwhile, Williamson says that while he’s bummed The Waterfront won’t continue, he’s glad he had the chance to make season 1.
“A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront,” he wrote in a post on his Instagram Story. “While I’m sad the Buckley’s won’t be back for a season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1.”
“I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew,” he continued. “My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show both in NC and LA. You were all amazing. Thank you to my partners at Universal TV. And thank you to Netflix for taking a chance on a very personal story. You were truly a joy to work with! It was one of the best experience of my life! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
The Waterfront is streaming on Netflix.
