Just days after news of actor Nicky Katt’s death at age 54 broke, his cause of death has been revealed.

Citing law enforcement sources, TMZ reports that the Dazed and Confused star’s body was found hanging in his apartment last Tuesday (April 8) by his landlord, who had reportedly stopped by approximately a week before to inform him that he needed to pay his rent.

The door was ajar and Katt had reportedly been dead for over a day when his body was discovered. A suicide note was not left behind.

Elise Ravenscroft, Katt’s sister, confirmed her brother’s cause of death in a statement to Deadline, telling the outlet that he “died by suicide after battling with depression—one that he fought bravely but quietly.”

“This is a pain no family should endure, yet far too many do,” she shared. “Mental illness is real, it is powerful, and it is often invisible. We hope that by sharing this, we can help break the silence and stigma that so often surrounds mental health struggles.”

Ravenscroft also noted that she was “deeply saddened that the details of [her] brother’s passing were made public without [her] consent at a time when [their] family was still trying to process the shock and grief of his loss.”

“In this moment of grief, we kindly ask for compassion—not only for our family as we mourn this unimaginable loss—but for every person who is silently struggling,” she stated. “We also ask for privacy to navigate this tragedy and begin the process of healing. If you or someone you know is experiencing depression, please reach out. You are not alone, and help is available.”

Other than the 1993 indie drama, Katt also made a name for himself with film credits in Boiler Room (2000), The Way of the Gun (2000) and Sin City (2005), and in TV roles on shows like Boston Public. Katt has since been mourned by Planet Terror director Robert Rodriguez on X, who praised Katt as “an absolute joy on and off the camera.”

If you or someone you know are experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 988.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, call or text the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) hotline at 800-950-NAMI (6264).
