Estate attorney Gideon Alper calls Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s divorce agreement ‘extraordinary.’ Here’s why.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s divorce announcement is a public relations lesson that is not often presented in Hollywood. The former couple, who had been together for nearly 20 years, have kept things exceptionally simple despite the drama escalating as the media dissects what went wrong. After Kidman’s divorce filing on September 30, the public learned the details of her and the country star’s child support and alimony arrangements. The agreements are shockingly clean considering the messiness of most high-profile splits.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban divorce: child support and alimony details
Fans have admired Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s marriage since they wed on June 25, 2006. The Holland actress and “The Fighter” singer have long presented a relationship of deep love and respect — a stark contrast to many of the short-lived marriages in the entertainment industry. Now, as Kidman establishes residency in Portugal and Urban prepares for a world tour, the couple is dotting the i’s of their divorce agreement.
According to court documents filed in Tennessee, Kidman will be the primary parent to their two daughters. Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14, will live with her for 306 days a year. Urban will have 59 days of parenting annually. Both parents disclosed monthly incomes of more than $100,000. Their considerable earnings likely contributed to their decision to forgo child support altogether.
Alper Law‘s Gideon Alper calls this move “extraordinary.” The estate and family attorney explains, “In most divorces, child support reflects time spent with each parent. Here, even though Nicole has the children almost full-time, the agreement waives support entirely.”
Kidman and Urban’s large net worths affect their child support agreement
The former pair possessed a $325 million combined net worth. Now, divided according to their individual portfolios, Kidman and Urban can still fully support their daughters. “Child support is designed to ensure children enjoy comparable lifestyles with each parent,” Alper notes. “But when both parties are multimillionaires, the court doesn’t see the need to transfer money. Each parent can cover the children’s expenses directly.”
The divorce papers also document spousal support details. Neither Kidman nor Urban will pay alimony. All properties, trusts, and business assets will remain separate. Kidman and Urban are also responsible for their own debts.
“It’s one of the cleanest financial settlements we’ve seen from a celebrity couple,” Alper states. “No ongoing payments, no joint assets, and no courtroom battle, just a blueprint for moving on.” As pop culture aficionados mourn the end of one of Hollywood’s sweetest relationships, fans can take heart knowing both parties are enjoying a drama-free divorce — at least concerning finances.
