Nigeria’s men’s hockey team wrapped up their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations journey with a resounding success, clinching the bronze medal by defeating Kenya 3-1 in Ismailia, Egypt.

In an exhilarating third-place showdown, Nigeria seized the early advantage when Solomon Dennis showcased his skill with a composed finish in the 16th minute, putting his team in the lead.

Kenya momentarily leveled the score through Usagi Sutcliffe’s effort before the halftime whistle. However, Nigeria’s well-coordinated play and sharp offense proved insurmountable in the second half.

This victory not only signifies Nigeria’s second consecutive podium finish in this prestigious continental tournament but also underscores their growing stature as a formidable force in African hockey.

James leads charge with brace

The spotlight shone brightly on forward Samaila James, who delivered a stellar performance by scoring twice from penalty corners, ultimately securing Nigeria’s triumph.

His goals in the 44th and 49th minutes showcased his trademark accuracy and power, earning him the tournament’s top scorer title with eight goals.

James’ leadership and consistency throughout the tournament were pivotal to Nigeria’s run, as the team displayed remarkable improvement in both attack and defence.

The side’s tactical maturity and mental strength, describing the bronze win as a “statement of intent” for future competitions.

South Africa retain title, Nigeria eyes future glory

While Nigeria celebrated their bronze success, South Africa continued their dominance by defeating hosts Egypt 5–1 to clinch their record eighth African title.

The victory earned them a spot at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Nigeria’s strong performance, however, stood out as one of the biggest positives of the tournament.

Their resilience against top-ranked sides and renewed attacking flair drew praise from fans and officials alike.

The Nigerian Hockey Federation expressed optimism that the team’s progress signals a new era, pledging to invest in youth development and better international exposure ahead of the next edition.
