A Nigerian woman living abroad has candidly expressed her frustrations with the job search process, contrasting the challenges of finding employment overseas with the situation in Nigeria.
In a video she posted on X (previously known as Twitter), she shared her nostalgia for the more straightforward job-seeking experience back home, where opportunities seemed more readily available.
She explained that in Nigeria, hiring decisions are sometimes swiftly made based on personal connections, leading to a more direct recruitment process.
Expressing her sentiments, she remarked:
“I really miss Nigeria. Over there, you might just hear, ‘Start work on Monday.’ You won’t find that kind of thing here.”
In contrast, securing jobs in the UK is far more challenging. Even basic roles demand years of experience that often seem impossible to meet.
“Here in the UK, they will tell you to have 10 years’ experience for a cleaning job,” she added.
Her story has sparked conversations among Nigerians abroad, with many agreeing that job hunting back home can feel easier, while others disagreed.
Social media users shared relatable experiences, comparing the struggles of finding work in Nigeria and overseas.
One user wrote, “If this is true, pack your bags and come home.” Another added, “This is a pure lie; you all won’t stop!”

“Nothing will prepare you for the shege you’ll face in the UK, especially when job hunting. I miss Nigeria; someone would have told me to go to a company and resume the following week. Here in the UK, they’re asking for 10 years of experience for a cleaning job.”
