Olivia Colman Debuts Long Gray Hair at Wicker Premiere

Olivia Colman debuted her new grey locks at the London Film Festival on Thursday, arriving at the premiere of her latest film, Wicker, in an elegant Celine gown.

The 52-year-old actress embraced her natural curls and silver hair after moving on from her brunette pixie cut, while affectionately wrapping an arm around her husband, Ed Sinclair, at the BFI Southbank.

Colman and Sinclair, who married in 2001 and have three children together, looked deeply in love as they shared a tender moment on the red carpet.

Her Wicker co-star Alexander Skarsgard, 50, also attracted attention when he arrived in unusual Saint Laurent transparent shoes that put his feet on full display.

The actor, who portrays the wicker man, made a bold statement in a vivid gold suit from the designer’s 2027 spring/summer collection, first unveiled at Paris Fashion Week this year.

Colman and Skarsgard were joined by Elizabeth Debicki, 36, who dazzled in a plunging, glittering black suit paired with Chaumet jewellery.

After the cast and directors took to the stage to introduce the film, Olivia, Peter and Alexander soon left to attend another engagement.

Taking the director’s microphone, Alexander joked: “We won’t be here because we’ve got more important things. We’re doing Graham Norton, so it’s not a big deal.

“Thanks for coming. We hope you laugh, we hope you enjoy it, that you’re moved by it. We hope that you go home and that you want to make sweet love to your wicker chair.”

Elizabeth, meanwhile, stayed for the screening and the director’s question-and-answer session, choosing to spend time with her fellow villagers who appeared alongside her in the film.

The film’s unusual premise has left many viewers scratching their heads.

Billed as “vulgar, horny yet unexpectedly heartwarming”, Wicker follows Colman’s character, the lonely Fisherwoman, whose romantic prospects are hindered by her persistent fishy odour.

Longing for affection, she asks the local basket weaver, played by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, to create a husband for her from wicker.

The creation, portrayed by Alexander, comes to life and proves so irresistible that he ignites intense jealousy among the women of the village, putting the established social order at risk.

The first trailer premiered to considerable fanfare in July, leaving viewers stunned by its graphic scenes between Colman and Skarsgard.

Although the Oscar-winning star is no stranger to a regency bonkbuster, having played Queen Anne in The Favourite, her encounter with the wicker man marks one of the most unusual scenes of her career.

The trailer begins with a racy scene showing Colman flung across her bed during a passionate encounter, before revealing how her single status made her the target of ridicule in the village.

At her request, Peter spends a month weaving her a husband. The finished creation comes to life and marries her in a chapel.

Another racy scene follows as Colman undresses her wicker husband, gasping in awe as she admires his body before being grabbed in a passionate clinch.

The villagers, which include Quadrophenia’s Phil Daniels, Saltburn’s Richard E Grant and The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki, soon grow obsessed with the couple and their relationship – with the men wanting the wicker man ousted, and the women lusting over him.

Taking to the comment section after the trailer dropped, baffled fans wrote: ‘Olivia will not do a normal movie and I live for that’; ‘You know what? Fair play to her. I’m not going to judge the lady for wanting a hot monster husband’; ‘this looks interesting, probably has a good message behind this story’;

‘This is insane, I’m so excited to see this. Perfect casting’; ‘Somebody wove an interesting tale with this one, it seems.’

Others drew parallels between Wicker and Wicked, in which Wicked Witch Elphaba is in love with Scarecrow; and The Shape Of Water, in which a lonely janitor falls in love with an amphibious creature.

The cast have spoken about the bizarre nature of the unconventional romance, which is based on Ursula Wills’ short story, The Wicker Husband.

Elizabeth said: ‘The character I play in this woman is called the Tailor’s wife.

‘She’s deeply unhappy, but she doesn’t know that yet, until she witnesses another woman in the village – the stinky beautiful fisherwoman – make a very different choice about the path she wants her life to follow and that completely unravels my character.’

Touching on his own role, Peter said: ‘He’s also an outsider, like the fisherwoman, so he has an affection for the stinky fisherwoman, although I don’t think the basketmaker even smells the stink.’

Meanwhile, Colman has raved about the film, saying: ‘I think it’s in my top three favourite scripts I’ve ever read.’

Wicker currently boasts a 91 per cent ‘fresh’ status on reviews aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes after its premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January.

Wicker is set for release on October 23 in the US and on October 30 in the UK
