Oscar Isaac said there were “tons of reasons” behind the timing of his marriage to Elvira Lind. Speaking with GQ Style in 2018, the Star Wars actor explained that Lind, who is Danish and not a U.S. citizen, was expecting their child at the time, prompting conversations about where the couple would build their life. “We wanted to be a family unit a bit more,” he said.
While Isaac noted that marriage can carry a different meaning in Denmark, where he said the institution itself may be viewed as less significant, the pair ultimately chose to marry after the experiences they had shared.
The decision became especially clear as Isaac’s mother fell ill. “I saw her carrying my child, bathing my sick mom,” he recalled. “Seeing her do that, I just thought, ‘I want to be with this person forever and ever.’” He said he wanted to formalize that commitment by taking “that extra step” with Lind.

Lind was already documenting Isaac’s preparation for his stage production of Hamlet when she learned she was pregnant and that Eugenia was sick. Those intimate and difficult moments eventually informed King Hamlet, the documentary released in 2025.
At the DOC NYC documentary festival in November, Isaac praised the Oscar-nominated filmmaker and reflected on the lasting record she created of an art form that is usually fleeting. “Theater is sort of ephemeral and is meant to show up and go, and the fact that this document exists in that way is a miracle,” the Scenes From a Marriage star said, according to People. Still, he emphasized that Lind herself was the greater gift: “Really, the miracle is that Elvira came into my life. And that she does what she does, which is, she never runs away from the sharp edges of life. She doesn’t try to sand them down.”
