In a thrilling display of determination and skill, Nigeria’s football prodigy, Victor Osimhen, played a pivotal role as the Super Eagles soared to a 4-1 triumph over Gabon on Thursday. This victory, achieved after an intense period of extra time, propels them into Sunday’s playoff final against DR Congo.

The match unfolded with Nigeria asserting control for much of the game, showcasing their prowess on the field. However, the encounter took a suspenseful turn towards the end of regular time when Osimhen missed a golden opportunity to secure a decisive win, thus extending the battle into extra time.

Osimhen reflects on missed chance

Despite this slip, the Galatasaray forward maintained his focus and vigor, continually seeking the opening that would lead to victory.

In a post-match interview, Osimhen reflected on the missed chance, acknowledging the challenges faced but expressing a seasoned perspective on the nature of his role.

“I am a striker, sometimes I score the goals no one believes, and sometimes I miss the ones people think I am going to score,” he shared with a blend of humility and insight.

He explained that his mindset helped him stay focused despite the setback.

“I have the mentality that it does not matter what kind of opportunities I lose, so long the game is still on, I will try to correct it.”

Osimhen also revealed that he apologised to his teammates and promised to make amends in extra time.

“Just like I told my teammates, I told them I am sorry and I told them I am going to correct it in the extra time and I am happy I did it,” he added.

Super Eagles dominate extra time

True to his promise, Osimhen delivered with two decisive goals in extra time, restoring confidence and sealing Nigeria’s commanding win.

Sevilla duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke also found the net, rounding off a strong performance from the Super Eagles.

Focus shifts to DR Congo

The victory keeps Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup alive as they prepare for a crucial showdown with DR Congo on Sunday.

The team will aim to maintain their momentum and secure the final ticket.
