In a recent turn of events on the set of the popular series Outer Banks, stars Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline found themselves stepping in to handle an unsettling situation involving cocreator Jonas Pate. Reports suggest Pate allegedly grabbed and shook a production assistant while filming in Dubrovnik, Croatia, shouting in the assistant’s face before Stokes, 33, intervened. Cline, 27, also played a role in diffusing the tension.
According to TMZ, despite this altercation, production continued as planned. Jonas Pate, not only a cocreator and director for Outer Banks, is also recognized as the mastermind behind Prime Video’s The Runarounds, featuring his daughter, Lilah Pate.
Insiders have revealed to TMZ that although tensions were notably high on set during the incident, such outbursts are not considered unusual for Pate. This insight has led Us Weekly to seek comments from both Netflix and Pate’s representative to shed more light on the situation.
Since its 2020 debut, Outer Banks has captivated audiences with its portrayal of a divided coastal community in North Carolina, showcasing the adventures and evolving dynamics of its teen protagonists. While the series continues to entertain, the recent on-set drama adds a layer of real-life intrigue to the ever-popular Netflix show.
Outer Banks, which debuted in 2020, follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in a coastal North Carolina town. The social divide is introduced through the Kooks — a.k.a the wealthy residents — and the working class Pogues. A search for lost treasure causes the groups to be even more at odds.
It was confirmed in November 2024 that Outer Banks would end after season 5, wrapping the arcs of John B (Stokes), Sarah (Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). While fans were initially excited for one final journey with the Pogues, things took a turn when the season 4 finale ended with JJ’s shocking death.
Despite criticism about the show’s decision to get rid of one of the main characters, Pate defended the writing choice.
“It’s been kind of lurking in his DNA from the beginning. He’s really a tragic figure, and the idea of mortality, and you only have a finite window — it’s also a theme of the show,” Pate told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2024. “It’s something John B has talked about from the first season. So believe it or not, this is something that was always sort of baked in the cake, and we just wanted to tell the story as elegantly and interestingly as possible.”
Pankow weighed in on the surprising narrative change as well, telling Netflix’s Tudum that same month, “When I first found out JJ was gonna risk it all and not make it, I understood it. And the risks got bigger and bigger, and the stakes got higher and higher. His death really does set up the future of OBX with the question, what is worth it? And when someone that close to you is gone, how do you navigate that?”
Along with finishing Outer Banks, Pate is also expected to be working on a second season of The Runarounds. Before the show premiered in September, Pate teased that there were already plans for more installments. He also revealed that he was writing a prequel to Outer Banks, titled Kildare. The series is still in the early stages but would feature a whole new set of young actors and focus on the founding of each group in the show’s fictional Figure 8 town.
Outer Banks is currently streaming on Netflix and The Runarounds is out on Prime Video.
