Pastor Tobi Adegboyega Challenges Perceptions: ‘Bible Authored by White Men, Christianity a Social Construct

Nigerian cleric Pastor Tobi Adegboyega has sparked intense discussions online following his statements about Christianity, which he described as a “social construct” introduced to Africans during the colonial era.

In a widely circulated video, Adegboyega claimed that colonial powers promoted Christianity as a dominant faith to exert control over African communities.

The colonialists arrived in Africa, insisting they were bringing a superior religion,” he remarked, suggesting that biblical teachings on obedience and the relationship between masters and servants were twisted to support their oppressive agendas.

The pastor also connected the transatlantic slave trade to the strategic use of Christianity as a means of subjugation.

Criticism of church practices and cultural norms

Furthermore, Adegboyega criticized the inflexibility of certain religious practices, pointing out that many rules concerning marriage and social behavior were later additions, rather than mandates found in the Bible.

He called on African youth to prioritise spirituality over religion, encouraging self-awareness, questioning, and intelligence as paths to empowerment rather than blind obedience.

Calls for a “liberated generation”

The pastor urged churches to focus on transparency and educating congregants, rather than restricting access to leadership or church resources.

His remarks have divided online audiences, with some defending Christianity’s empowering aspects and others questioning the motivations of religious institutions.

Adegboyega also reflected on his personal journey, confessing past involvement in a confraternity and vices before relocating to the UK, where he now dedicates himself fully to spiritual leadership.
