Patrick Mahomes addressed the comments made by Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid regarding his performance during the team’s recent loss to the Denver Broncos.

“I’m simply not executing the throws,” Mahomes, 30, admitted to reporters on Wednesday, November 19. “That’s really the main issue. Our guys are getting open, providing opportunities for me to make plays downfield.”

Statistics from Pro Football Focus (PFF) highlight that Mahomes has completed only 17 out of 48 attempts on passes of 20 or more yards this season.

“Improving in that area and giving our guys a chance usually pays off,” Mahomes elaborated. “Landing a deep throw can open up the offense, allowing us to connect on other passes as well. We’ve consistently been good at capitalizing on available opportunities. It’s crucial to hit some of those deep shots to stretch the defense, which in turn creates chances to spread the ball throughout our offense.”

Meanwhile, Randi Mahomes, mother of the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback, remains optimistic about her son’s team’s playoff prospects. She reacted to an encouraging message from a fan on X, Tuesday, November 18. “I still believe in our Chiefs 🙏,” the fan wrote, sharing a picture of Patrick, 30, alongside the message.

Mahomes’ play was covertly criticized by Reid, 67, during a virtual meeting with reporters on Monday, November 17. 

“We’re calling quite a few of the [run-pass options],” Reid said. “Yesterday, they were giving us opportunities to throw the football. So we utilized the opportunities there.”

Reid continued, “The runs are being called. Sometimes they get turned into passes in today’s world. That’s how it goes.”

The Chiefs only attempted to run the ball 14 times in their 22-19 loss to the Broncos on Sunday, November 16, compared to Mahomes’ 45 pass attempts. 

Reid’s analysis of the play calling disparity explained that Mahomes was often given the option to run or pass, most frequently choosing the latter. 

Mahomes was honest in his assessment of his game after the game on Sunday, referencing a missed deep ball to Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy on Kansas City’s first drive of the game. 

“I’ve just got to make the throw,” Mahomes told reporters. “There’s no other way around it. The play was designed for Travis [Kelce] — and I think Travis is wide open — but you have these alerts in your plays and how [Broncos safety Brandon Jones] was sitting with Xavier’s speed, I knew he was going to have a chance down the field. I’ve just got to give him a chance. I miss that one.”

Mahomes added, “I think we’re really talented and we’ve got a lot of great players, but it’s about being more consistent. I think it starts with me. There’s times where I’m firing and we’re moving the ball down the field at ease. But there’s times where we go in spurts where I miss a throw or a [pass] protection call.”

Kansas City now sits three games behind AFC West-leading Denver in the loss column and currently find themselves out of the AFC playoff picture. 

The Chiefs have not missed the playoffs since Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2018.

Despite the doom and gloom, Reid insisted his team isn’t choosing to wallow in despair. 

“We’re not quite as negative as the outside world is here,” he said on Monday. “We know what we need to clean up. And we need to do it. But the guys — they get it. I mean, some of these guys have been through some pretty good seasons. And this isn’t like this one’s lost.”

He added, “We’ve just got to clean up a few of these things. And the urgency level — obviously we need to make sure we take care of that now.”
