More than fifty years after Saturday Night Live debuted in the United States, the iconic comedy show is getting a British spin. Saturday Night Live UK will launch its inaugural six-episode season, airing weekly starting March 21 on Sky and NOW. In a treat for American audiences, Peacock has secured exclusive next-day streaming rights, allowing U.S. viewers to enjoy the British humor alongside their friends across the Atlantic.
The new series introduces a cast of 11 talented newcomers: Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sid, and Paddy Young. While many have made appearances in BBC comedies, they largely remain under the mainstream radar. Their involvement in SNL UK could catapult them into the spotlight, much like the American version has done for many comedians before them.
SNL has long been a springboard for comic talent, launching the careers of legends like Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, and Mike Myers. The show continues to elevate its cast members to new heights, as seen with Bowen Yang, who has gained fame beyond the show with his successful podcast, Las Culturistas, alongside Matt Rogers.
The British edition will mirror the format of its U.S. counterpart, featuring live performances in front of a studio audience. According to Sky, SNL UK will incorporate the signature elements of the original, such as opening monologues, topical sketches, and the well-loved “Weekend Update,” all infused with British flair. The show will continue the tradition of featuring a new celebrity host and a popular musical guest each week.
Excitement builds as the premiere episode is set to feature Tina Fey as host, with musical guest Wet Leg. Subsequent episodes will see Jamie Dornan and Riz Ahmed take on hosting duties, while musical acts like Wolf Alice and Kasabian are slated to perform.
As SNL has recently undergone a major resurgence in the zeitgeist, the celebrity hosting slot seems to have become more highly coveted. Almost a prerequisite to lasting relevance in today’s popular culture, rising stars and seasoned ones alike are pining for the gig that provides an opportunity to show off a more unfiltered, human side of themselves and connect with audiences on a new level. Recently, the viral breakout star of Heated Rivalry, Connor Storrie, took on the role, generating loads of internet buzz before and after his appearance, and prolonging his clutch on the cultural moment.
We’re looking forward to seeing how the Brits fare in our comedic territory, and can’t wait to cheer them on when the Saturday night episodes hit Peacock the next day.
