Prime Video has unveiled the first look at Sophie Turner stepping into the role of Lara Croft for the upcoming live-action series, Tomb Raider.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary video game franchise, Turner, best known for her role in Game of Thrones, will take on the iconic character of the globe-trotting archaeologist and adventurer. She follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who have previously portrayed the daring heroine.

The streaming platform has confirmed that production is officially underway for this highly anticipated series.

Turner will be part of a stellar ensemble cast, which includes renowned actors Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Jack Bannon, Martin Bobb-Semple, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

This exciting project is helmed by Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who serves as the creator, writer, and executive producer. This series is part of her lucrative collaboration with Amazon, with Chad Hodge also joining as executive producer. Jonathan Van Tulleken will take on directing and executive producing duties.

The series was first announced to be in development in January 2023, per Variety. Now, it looks like production is finally ramping up, which means it could premiere in late 2026/2027.

Waller-Bridge said in a statement after the project was announced, “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

Prime Video’s Tomb Raider marks the latest live-action adaptation of the video game franchise. Jolie starred as the titular archeologist in the 2001 feature Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. Vikander later look the mantle in the 2018 movie, Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider marks Turner’s next high profile project.

The actress has starred in several television series since making her mark as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, including Joan, The Staircase, The Prince and Survive.

Next, she is leading Prime Video’s six-episode thriller Steal, premiering Jan. 21.
