These days, Ciara is married to NFL quarterback Russell Wilson. But once upon a time, the “Like a Boy” songstress was in another high-profile relationship that fans still have some questions about today.

Before she and the athlete said “I do,” Ciara dated rapper Future. They started seeing each other in 2012, and the hip-hop artist was even featured in the singer’s music video for “Body Party.” They got engaged and welcomed their son, Future Zahir Wilburn, in 2014. But a few months later, Ciara broke off their engagement. Following their split, the two sparred back and forth a few times through the media.

So what caused Ciara to pull the plug on their relationship? Here’s what the songbird has said about that.

Ciara reveals why she decided to end things with Future

Many fans may remember that there were allegations of infidelity on Future’s part and reports that things between them had become “toxic.”

Ciara previously opened up during an appearance on the Call Your Daddy show about exactly why she decided to break up with Future. CiCi explained that when she examined her relationship back then, everything inside her told her that she had to make a change in her life, and she could feel that throughout her body to its core.

“When you know you’re supposed to make a super-defined decision in your life, you know it from the head to your feet, from your feet to your head,” Ciara told show host Alex Cooper. “You know it. It’s almost like your taste buds change. You gotta also sometimes look in the mirror and reflect on yourself, like what are things that I could be doing differently in my life? I’m looking for a change but what does that mean?”

She continued, “When you have a child, it’s very important to me; it’s no time to play around. I am now responsible for another life, so what am I doing? How am I thinking that through? When you’re tired, you’re tired, and we don’t want to be tired all the time. I want joy. I want to make sure my cup is full.”

Ciara concluded: “Like, I always say, don’t let nobody waste your time … I don’t care if it’s a relationship or friendship, business–just don’t let it waste your time. It’s just not worth it. So, those are the things that come to my mind when I process when there’s a pivotal moment in any aspect of my life.”

When Ciara and Russell Wilson got together

Following her split from Future, Ciara and Wilson started dating. They made their first public appearance together when they attended the White House’s Japanese state dinner in 2015.

Then, in 2016, while vacationing in the Seychelles, they announced via social media that they were engaged.

“She said Yes!!! Since Day 1 knew you were the one. No Greater feeling #TrueLove,” the football player captioned the Instagram video.

A few months later, they tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, England. Ciara and Wilson have since welcomed three children together as they are parents to Sienna Princess, Win Harrison, and Amora Princess. The quarterback is also of course stepfather to Future’s son.
