Renowned journalist and broadcaster Rufai Oseni has expressed deep concern over the tragic killing of Anglican priest Venerable Edwin Achi, characterizing it as a deliberate assault on religious faith and a grim indicator of escalating insecurity in Nigeria.

Oseni reported that the priest and his wife were kidnapped in Kaduna State. Despite the family’s efforts to meet the ransom demands set by the kidnappers, the criminals heartlessly directed them to collect the priest’s decomposing remains.

He pointed out that this heinous act was fueled by religious animosity and is indicative of a broader pattern of violence targeting Christian communities.

Reverend Achi’s mother untold of son’s passing

Oseni further shed light on the profound emotional toll this incident has inflicted on the family, particularly noting that the priest’s mother, who is in her nineties, remains unaware of her son’s passing.

He emphasized that this tragic case underscores the pervasive insecurity that continues to afflict families throughout the nation.

“Nigeria has happened to me. When venerable Achi was kidnapped, they raised a ransom for him, it was after his family had paid the ransom that the bandits told them to go and pick up his decomposing body. Venerable Achi was killed for his faith, pure and simple. He was a clergyman, he was a man of the cloth. So when the propagandists start and say there’s no Christian genocide, me, I will tell them the truth. Can I surprise you? Venerable Achi’s mother is still alive. She’s in her 90s. Nobody till now has been able to tell venerable Achi’s mother that her son, who’s in his 60s, was killed after ransom was paid.”
