The first two episodes of the series Down Cemetery Road deliver shocking conclusions, but Episode 2, titled “A Kind of Grief,” presents a mind-blowing revelation. The Apple TV+ series unveils that a seemingly harmless character is, in fact, a cold-blooded assassin who has been hiding in plain sight.
**Spoiler Alert for Down Cemetery Road Episode 1 “Almost True” and Episode 2 “A Kind of Grief,” both now available on Apple TV+**
In Episode 2, the story concludes with Oxford art restorer Sarah Tucker (played by Ruth Wilson) turning to her seemingly gentle neighbor Rufus (portrayed by Ken Nwosu) for comfort and security. Sarah has been on edge ever since she began probing into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Dinah, a local girl who survived a recent explosion. Dinah’s image has been suspiciously wiped from the media, and she has been hidden away by the hospital. Convinced of a conspiracy, Sarah seeks the assistance of local private investigator Joe Silvermann (played by Adam Godley).
Joe’s investigation is so thorough that it seemingly leads to his demise. On the very night he informs Sarah of a significant breakthrough, someone breaks into his detective office and murders him, staging it to appear as a suicide. However, the evidence suggests that Joe was actually assassinated. Soon, Sarah joins forces with Joe’s wife and fellow investigator, Zoë Boehm (played by Emma Thompson), to uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, Sarah remains vigilant, aware that a mysterious figure (portrayed by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) she saw at the explosion site has been lingering around Oxford. Fearing this man might be in her home with malicious intent, Sarah asks her quirky neighbor Rufus to ensure her doors and windows are secure. Rufus, a charming juggler, stays to keep Sarah company, sharing wine and laughter. It is then that Rufus drops a bombshell: he is the assassin, strategically placed in the community with a covert mission that Sarah’s investigations are close to unraveling.
Rufus is actually Axel. He planted the bomb that blew up Dinah’s house and he is the man who killed Joe. And now he is going to kill Sarah.
“Ken [Nwosu] played that part so nice throughout the first two episodes,” Ruth Wilson told DECIDER. “Such a sort of wonderful, warm, loving character that Sarah kind of underestimated. Just thought was a bit useless. And then he reveals himself to be the the baddie all along.”
What follows is a tense, violent fight scene that only ends when Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s mystery man bursts into Sarah’s house with a gun.
“We had a brilliant stuntwoman,” Wilson said. “She was fantastic and she created this amazing stunt sequence, which was really violent. We wanted it to be as violent as possible to sort of go up against what Ken had been before.”
Wilson reiterated that part of what makes the Rufus reveal so stunning was Ken Nwosu’s performances.
“It was great fun to play with him,” she said. “He’s a brilliant actor, Ken. And that was a great scene.”
So what happens next? Will Sarah survive? You’ll have to tune into Down Cemetery Road Episode 3 when it arrives on Apple TV+ next week…
