For comedian Chelsea Handler, the prescription of Ozempic was an unexpected surprise. During an episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast on January 25, 2023, Handler shared how her “anti-aging doctor” had prescribed her the medication without her fully understanding its purpose.
“I had no idea I was even taking it,” she explained. Her doctor had simply mentioned, “If you ever want to lose five pounds, this is effective.”
Despite giving it a try, Handler quickly discovered that the drug’s side effects were not to her liking. She recounted returning from a vacation and administering the injection to herself. A few days later, while at lunch with a friend, she realized they were both feeling nauseous. Her friend mentioned she was experiencing these symptoms because of Ozempic. Handler, who had just returned from Spain and initially attributed her nausea to jet lag, realized it might be the medication.
Recognizing that she didn’t need Ozempic for any medical reason, Handler chose to discontinue its use. She decided to pass on the remaining doses to friends who might find them beneficial.
Ultimately, Handler stopped using the drug because it wasn’t medically necessary for her, adding that she gave away the remaining doses to friends.
“I’ve injected about four or five of my friends with Ozempic, because I realized I didn’t want to use it because it was silly,” she said. “It’s for heavy people. I have people coming over to my house, and I’m like, ‘OK, I can see you at 1, I can see you at 2.’”
