Scream VI has a chance to set a franchise best domestic box office record over its opening weekend, with the hotly- anticipated film aiming for  $35million + takings.

The new film, which stars Courteney Cox, Jenna Ortega and Hayden Panettiere, is due to be released on March 10, and may beat the record held by 2000’s Scream 3, which raked in $34.7 million  on its debut.

2022’s Scream made $30million on its domestic opening, and with much fanfare around the franchise’s latest offering, Scream VI could surpass that record.

The latest film comes 26 years after the original and transports the action from Woodsboro to the mean streets of New York.

The offical synopsis reads: ‘Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City’.

‘However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage’.

Scream VI’s biggest competition for box office takings will be Creed III, with sci-fi dinosaur flick 65 also released this weekend.

It comes after Courteney spilled some juicy new details about the upcoming horror sequel.

The actress revealed she will face off with Ghostface, the masked serial killer.

Various different characters have put on the Ghostface mask over the course of the movie series, and their identities are eventually revealed.

However Courteney revealed that in Scream IV, for the first time, her character Gale Weathers will have to hold her own against Ghostface without knowing who it is.

‘I have a really good scene with Ghostface and it was amazing. I’ve obviously been stabbed many times and all that, but this time, to work with Ghostface and not know who’s under the mask, it was a really fun,’ she said in a new interview with Variety. ‘Usually by the time I’m getting stabbed, I know who it is.’

Courteney is the only star of the first Scream movie to remain with the franchise all the way up to the new film.

Her ex-husband David Arquette, whom she first became an item with while making the original Scream, was in the first five pictures before he was killed off.

Meanwhile Neve Campbell, who became a boldface name through the slasher series, declined to be in Scream VI because of money.

Neve revealed in an interview with Deadline last year that she had turned down an offer to return for Scream VI because she felt her pay was insufficient.

‘As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,’ she said.

‘I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise,’ the 49-year-old actress explained.

She had thus far been inextricably associated with the franchise, which has grossed over $744 million cumulatively worldwide..’

Courteney has consequently had to make a Scream movie without Neve for the first time, and in her new Variety interview she said of the experience: ‘I missed working with her, but I’m going to support whatever she feels is right.’
