Yellowjackets fans cannot wait for season 3 to drop, but it means saying goodbye to one beloved character for the final time.

In the season 2 finale, adult Natalie Scatorccio, played by Juliette Lewis, was accidentally killed by Misty Quigley by a phenobarbital injection. In new photos shared by Entertainment Weekly, it appears the other adult plane crash survivors are seemingly attending Natalie’s funeral in season 3.

Adult Van Palmer, played by Lauren Ambrose, adult Taissa Turner, played by Tawny Cypress, adult Shauna Sadecki, played by Melanie Lynskey and Jeff Sadecki, played by Warren Cole, are seen wearing black outfits while sitting together in a church.

Misty is not seen in the photo; however, series cocreator Ashley Lyle teased what’s to come for Christina Ricci’s colorful character in season 3.

“Misty is handling it great,” she joked before saying, “Natalie’s death certainly impacts Misty emotionally the most, but I think that the reverberations of it are felt by all of them.”

Throughout the show’s first two seasons, adult Natalie faced a lot of turmoil and was pretty open about her flaws.

“What I love about these past two seasons is that we’ve been given all the information about Natalie,” director Karyn Kusama told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2023. “We’ve been told over and over again that there’s a part of her that flirts with the death instinct in a pretty big way. Whether it’s her own addiction issues, whether it’s what she’s gone through in the past.”

“We’ve watched this character cheat death, come close to death, be foiled in attempting her own suicide, and now that sense of inevitability is finally answered by this terrible mistake,” she continued. “Just like a messy, human mistake. Which is similar to the finale in season one with Jackie dying almost out of poor judgment. That’s something the show does really well in exploring. And I think that was something always intentional about Natalie’s arc.”

But adult Natalie wasn’t the only character who died at the end of last season’s shocking finale. Misty’s boyfriend, Walter Tattersall, poisoned Kevyn Tan at the Willow Brook Ranch and moved his body into the trunk of his car. He also grabbed his gun and fired several shots at Kevyn’s lifeless body. It was heartbreaking to see all the hopeful ties to Natalie disappear during the episode.

At the end of last season, young Natalie, played by Sophie Thatcher, was named the leader of the group, which was a controversial move for some of the other girls.

And just when we thought the conditions couldn’t get any worse for the stranded soccer team, Coach Ben burned their cabin down after completely distancing himself from the group. Now, they’ll be forced to adapt to new challenges as they seek shelter, food and pockets of solace.

Other photos from season 3 show the girls out in the woods. It appears that they built tents out of leaves and trees to live in after losing the cabin. But even with that, Yellowjackets fans know there’s really no telling what’s in store for the group in the show’s new season.

“I think that people will be surprised by their resourcefulness in the face of their continued survival,” cocreator Bart Nickerson said.
