- Seun Kuti has criticised Wizkid’s fans for comparing the singer to Fela Kuti, calling it an insult to his late father’s legacy.
- His remarks have triggered widespread debate online, dividing opinions between Afrobeat purists and Wizkid supporters.
Seun Kuti, renowned Afrobeat musician, has once again ignited a debate on social media with a provocative statement aimed at the ardent followers of Nigerian music icon Wizkid, collectively known as Wizkid FC.
Seun Kuti’s intense remarks criticized the comparisons being made between Wizkid and his legendary father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a towering figure in the Afrobeat genre. He labeled these comparisons as disrespectful and misleading. Seun argues that any attempt by fans to crown Wizkid as the “new Fela” is essentially an inappropriate appropriation of his father’s enduring image and legacy.
He accused Wizkid’s supporters of intentionally promoting a false narrative and cautioned them against dragging Fela’s name into such discussions. Seun emphasized that Fela’s profound influence on culture, politics, and music is unmatched and cannot be replicated by contemporary pop success.
In his own words:
“Wizkid fc needs to keep Fela’s name out of their mouth. You people try to steal the man image. You try to claim your fake artiste is the new Fela. It’s an insult to Fela to call Wizkid the new Fela. Wizkid fc are the most !gn0 rãnt fanbase in the world.”
The statement has since ignited heated reactions across social media, with some users backing Seun Kuti’s defence of his father’s legacy, while others accused him of unnecessary hostility and disrespect toward Wizkid’s achievements.
