Sharon Stone is opening up about the competitive side of show business.

During Stone’s Watch What Happens Live appearance on Sunday night (Aug. 17), a fan in the audience asked the actress if there were any famous roles she auditioned for that she didn’t wind up getting.

“I hope you have a lot of time. Oh, so many,” Stone answered. “I really would’ve liked to be in that movie with Kevin Spacey, but Annette Bening got the part.”

Referring to the 1999 comedy American Beauty, Stone added, “I wanted that movie. I really wanted that movie. But there were a lot of other movies that I wanted. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of them.”

Host Andy Cohen then wondered if there were any specific actresses she was always in competition with.

“Oh, millions and millions and millions of times,” she confessed. “I got to the point where I thought, ‘I hope they die. I am never gonna work unless that actress dies. What is happening? I just cannot get a job. What is with it? Why do they like her and they don’t like me ever?’ It gets like that. You’re just like, ‘Come on. Pick me once.’”

Despite the competition, Stone has starred in a number of notable movies, such as Basic Instinct and Casino, for which she won a Golden Globe, beating out actresses like Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon, Emma Thompson, and Elisabeth Shue.

“It was a hell of a group. Elizabeth Shue had just done the Las Vegas movie [Leaving Las Vegas] with Nic Cage. I mean, come on,” Stone said. “Meryl — I mean, who beats Meryl? I did!”

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
