This week’s episode of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test put Kody Brown in the spotlight, drawing attention for reasons beyond his reality TV fame. Known for his role on TLC’s Sister Wives and his former polygamous lifestyle, Brown struggled to connect with fellow participants on the show.
During a candid moment away from the dining hall, Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia expressed her thoughts about Brown, admitting, “I’ve spent the most time with him. We have to accept that he may get on our nerves and try to keep him involved. We need to make him feel included to keep things smooth.” Even the show’s directing staff seemed exasperated, with DS Billy Billingham likening Kody to a “big version of Chucky.”
Back at the living quarters, Kody shared insights into his life, revealing his experience with polygamy, his 18 children from four marriages, and three divorces. He candidly stated he would “never marry again,” explaining that he was raised in a culture where polygamy was the norm, a lifestyle his father also practiced.
Interested in the women Kody has been married to and the dynamics within his family? Here’s what we know:
Who are Kody Brown’s wives and ex-wives?
In 1990, Kody entered into a legal marriage with his first wife, Meri Brown. The couple had one child together. Their legal marriage ended in 2014 when Kody married Robyn Brown, though he and Meri remained spiritually married until 2022, when Meri chose to leave the family, according to People.
Three years after he legally wed Meri, Kody entered a spiritual marriage with Janelle Brown, making her the second wife to join the family. They went on to have six children together, but in 2022, Kody confirmed that Janelle had also dissolved their marriage.
In 1994, Christine Brown became Kody’s third wife, and, eventually, the first to leave him. After having six children together, Christine announce in November 2021 that she and Kody were no longer in their spiritual marriage, citing his strained relationship with their children as the reason for the separation.
Robyn Brown is Kody’s fourth, and, according to what he said on Special Forces, final wife. They were spiritually married after meeting in 2009, but they made their nuptials official in 2014 so that Kody could adopt Robyn’s three children from her previous marriage. They went on to have two more children together, and they remain married to this day.
Why is Kody Brown estranged from his children?
There seem to be a list of reasons why Kody is estranged from a handful of his kids. According to Kody, there was some “bad blood” within the family over his divorces, causing “communication [to cease]” with many of his children. He also shared that he didn’t “have a deep connection” with his kids, which has caused a lot of “disappointment,” and that he was accused of “favoring” his children with Robyn over the others. Moreover, Kody admitted that he, too, was “offended” by kids “rejecting” him as a father.
“I’m the discrepancy. I should’ve had a stronger relationship with my children,” Kody admitted to the DS.
“I’m at a place in my life now where I’m very willing to say that I’ve been wrong,” he continued. “My failures was because I didn’t know shit about being a dad and a husband and I really thought I did. I misunderstood that and I did it wrong in so many ways and I hated being blamed for it so it made me resistent to ownership.”
