Sophia Richie Granger is opening up about her postpartum journey, revealing how the “struggles” deeply impacted her mental health. In a candid interview, she shares her personal experience to raise awareness about the realities many new mothers face after childbirth.

“It’s shocking how little we hear about aftercare or what you might experience postpartum,” the new mother told InStyle in a recent interview at an LA Baby2Baby event.

“Having a place to turn to for education is crucial—because I didn’t even know where to look at first. What Baby2Baby is doing here—just distributing basic information on how to safely put your baby to sleep, for example—is amazing.”

Richie Granger continued saying that her “overwhelming postpartum time” centered around “mental health.”

“In my case, it was mental health,” she told the outlet. “Thankfully, I had the resources to manage my postpartum struggles—but it immediately made me think of the women who don’t. It can be extremely hard, and it really breaks my heart for those moms. So, it’s amazing to partner with Baby2Baby to give back—not just to babies, but to the mothers, too. Because mom is the source. Mom has to be okay for everything else to run smoothly.”

According to the Childstats.gov, 13.3% of women with a recent live birth self-reported experiencing postpartum depressive symptoms. These conditions are not only prevalent but also pose serious risks, as maternal mental health disorders, including suicide and overdose, are the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S., accounting for 23% of such deaths . Baby2Baby is adding on to their already philanthropic mission to help mothers with their postpartum mental health.

“… mental health is the leading cause of maternal mortality,” Baby2Baby co-CEO Norah Weinstein told InStyle.

“And so the ability to be able to give moms directly after giving birth items that they need and that their babies need—that are expensive during an already overwhelming postpartum time—is what we need to do,” she continued. “So we hand-selected them while surveying moms and getting feedback, and then we kept iterating to find exactly what they needed.”
